Friday is Juneteenth. The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.A total of 47 states and Washington D.C. celebrate Juneteenth as either a state holiday or observance. This week, the governors of New York and Virginia announced proposals to further recognize Juneteenth. But it's not a federal holiday.A Texas woman has been fighting to make that happen for years. And for civil rights activist Opal Lee, it's personal. On Juneteenth about 80 years ago, a mob of some 500 white supremacists tried to scare Lee’s family out of their home in Fort Worth, Texas.“My father came with a gun and the police told him if he busted a cap, they would let the mob have us,” said Lee. “The paper said the police said the crowd was so large, they couldn't control them, but they tore that house apart. They burned furniture.”Lee is now 93 years old, and she's dedicated her life to education and activism. In 2016, she he walked from Texas to D.C. to advocate for Juneteenth to become an official national holiday.Even a pandemic won't stop her. This year, Lee has plans for a socially distant celebration and a symbolic 2.5-mile walk.Lee says Juneteenth is about unity and recognizing freedom for all.“Slaves weren't free on the Fourth of July, so if it happened now, I would be ecstatic,” said Lee.If you'd like to join Lee's cause, you can add your name to her petition on Chang.org. She's hoping it will get to a million signatures and send a message to Congress to act. 1576

For months, many of us have done what we can to keep ourselves and families safe from the coronavirus. We have stayed home from events, worked from home and exercised caution when running errands, but for people who are obese, some have gravitated towards weight loss surgery as a way to protect themselves.According to medical experts, complications from COVID-19 can disproportionately affect people who are obese. In an August study, the Cleveland Clinic found patients with a body mass index of 30 or higher were found to be at a significantly higher risk for severe COVID-19, and those with a BMI of 35 and higher had a dramatically increased risk of death.“It’s been shown that people do worse with viral infections when they’re obese,” said Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director of bariatric surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. “In addition, the success of a vaccine is limited in people that are obese, for any viral vaccine historically.”That August study by the Cleveland Clinic also found that when patients with obesity lose at least 5% to 10% of their weight, their risk of cardiovascular disease drops and their survival rate improves. Perhaps, that is why so many have decided to have different types of bariatric surgery to control their weight.“Obesity is really a pro-inflammatory condition and we think it really affects your T cell response; your ability to appropriately attack infection,” said Dr. Snyder.Amanda Kines-Phillips is one of those people. In February, she had wanted to get her weight more under control and decided to go through with a mini gastric bypass surgery. However, because of COVID-19 and the ban on elective surgeries, Kines-Phillips’ surgery was pushed back to July.In the four months since her mini gastric bypass, she has lost 55 pounds and feels healthier and better about health in case she contracts the virus.“I have two small daughters that I need to be there for the rest of my life and to be the best mom that I can be,” she said. “So to me [this surgery] is a life-changing tool.”Dr. Snyder says during a typical week, he performs 12 to 15 surgeries to help people control their weight. He says the four other doctors in his practice have been completely full as well since the pandemic began.“I have just been blown away,” said Kines-Phillips.Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article had an incorrect first name for Dr. Michael Snyder. 2423

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Thursday joined a coalition of 22 state attorneys general in sending a letter to the United States Senate, urging the body to immediately hold a hearing and vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. In the letter, Cameron wrote that Barrett's "unwavering commitment to a judicial philosophy that prioritizes restraint, humility, and respect for the rule of law" should lead to a quick approval from the Senate.Cameron released the following statement in support of Barrett."I'm proud to join this coalition of attorneys general in support of Judge Barrett, and I'm confident that Senate Majority Leader McConnell will make sure she is confirmed. As former legal counsel to Senator McConnell, I was fortunate to be involved in the confirmation process for Justice Neil Gorsuch, and I know the qualifications and legal background required to be confirmed to our nation's highest court. Judge Barrett has these qualifications, and her experience, judicial philosophy, and commitment to the rule of law make her ideally suited to serve as an Associate Justice."McConnell has also come out in support of President Donald Trump's decision to nominate Barrett, who currently serves on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and spent several years as a professor at Notre Dame Law School, where she also earned her own law degree. The letter was led by the Attorney General of Louisiana and, in addition to Attorney General Cameron, was co-signed by the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.A copy of the letter is available here.Cameron has gained national attention in recent weeks as the lead investigator into the police shooting that led to the death of Breonna Taylor. Last week, a grand jury announced that no charges would be filed against the officers who shot Taylor during a narcotics raid on her apartment on March 13.Cameron has said the officers' use of force against Taylor was justified, as officers were fired upon first by Taylor's boyfriend.A member of the grand jury has filed a motion to make proceedings form the case public. Cameron's has until Friday to redact names and release the proceedings to the public. This story was originally published by WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. 2467
