LONDON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Some western commentators' critical comments concerning China's burgeoning relationship with Africa are "largely misplaced," says a Financial Times editorial.Wednesday's editorial - "China's new scramble for Africa" - said Western-led development strategies, however well meaning, did not break the cycle of under-development in Africa. Chinese investments, made for sound business reasons and boosting employment and growth, offer new hope and an alternative way forward, the editorial said.The infrastructure that the Chinese are building will also have positive spin-off effects for industries outside of natural resources. Chinese traders have brought cheap consumer goods to Africa. And, as labor costs rise at home, Chinese manufacturers may look at Africa with new interest, as a base for production, the editorial said.To the Western countries that uphold the spirit of competition, there's no reason to complain about China's strengthening its relationship with Africa, the editorial said.One reason that African governments often love doing business with the Chinese is that they are much less likely to condition their investments on improvements in government, and the pragmatic attitude of the Chinese government should be appreciated, the editorial said.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed it had started preparations for President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States early next year, which the ministry said would be profound and far-reaching for bilateral ties."China and the United States have maintained close communications about the visit, which will be very important and will bring far-reaching influence for bilateral relations in new era," spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing.Although Hu's U.S. visit had long been under discussion, it was the first time that China's foreign ministry confirmed the visit and elaborated on its significance.Ma said both China and the United States would like to see a successful visit that will boost the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century.At their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto in June, U.S. President Barack Obama formally invited Hu to pay a state visit to the United States early next year. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games.The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fire has been put out at the scene of a July 16 blast involving two oil pipelines in Dalian, a port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, by 2 a.m. Monday, the contingency headquarter said.The contingency headquarter said no crude oil has been found spilled over into the sea, and no ocean pollution has been detected.The fire was caused by the remaining oil in a tank which had been emptied before workers tried to remove it at 4:10 p.m.. No casualties have been reported.The tank, owned by China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), caught fire on July 16 when two pipelines at Dalian Xingang Harbor exploded.
