DURANGO, Colo. – The young bear that was burned in the East Canyon Fire in June was released back into the wild this week not far from where it was found, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.The 2-year-old bear had been recovering at CPW’s Frisco Creek rehab facility in Del Norte from burns he suffered during the fire. CPW said the bear weighed only 43 pounds when he was first captured in the fire.But after undergoing salve treatment on his paws, and having his bandages changed 16 times over the course of a month, he recovered and was moved from a pen with concrete floors to one with trees and hiding spaces mid-July, where he spent the past monthMichael Sirochman, the veterinary technician and manager at Frisco Creek, said the bear was 110 pounds and had seen its paws toughen up before he was released Monday.“He’s now about the weight he should be for a two-year-old bear and is in good shape for going into the fall,” Sirochman said.CPW officers originally found the bear on June 16 walking near a pond on the east side of the East Canyon Fire, which burned in June outside of Durango. Officials said the bear was released not far from that location on Monday.CPW said the bear originally hesitated for a moment as it looked at and smelled its new surroundings but then jumped from a CPW truck and ran into the forest. Dr. Anthony Fauci delivered more good news regarding a potential coronavirus vaccine, indicating some Americans could begin getting vaccinated by the end of this month.During an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it’s possible a vaccine could begin reaching some Americans by the end of the month, but was confident some would begin getting vaccinated by the end of the year.Fauci’s declaration came on the same day Pfizer said that its Phase 3 vaccine candidate was showing an effectiveness of over 90%. Fauci said the announcement was promising, but a few more questions need to be addressed before it is given approval. Fauci said that things like the vaccine’s durability and effect on the elderly are among concerns that still need to be tackled.“We may have doses that we’re able to give to people by the end of November, beginning of December,” Fauci told CNN’s Blitzer. “Now you have to go through the hoops of making sure all of the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed about the safety and regulatory aspects of it, but we would be giving vaccine, very likely, by the end of this year. That is good news.”Last month, the FDA put into place guidelines on approving a vaccine, which was more restrictive than what the White House had hoped for. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations.The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days.The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. Don’t expect BLM and social justice messages on basketball courts or jerseys in the NBA next season, according to league Commissioner Adam Silver.The 2020 NBA season has gotten a lot of attention for both the league’s response to the coronavirus pandemic with a “bubble” and their public embrace of social justice issues and the Black Lives Matter movement this summer.During a NBA Countdown interview on ESPN ahead of a playoff game earlier this week, Silver was asked about the league championing social justice and civil rights, but as Silver noted in a press conference recently, that has not been universally popular.“How committed are you to being that going forward?” host Rachel Nichols asked.Silver quickly responded, “We’re completely committed to standing for social justice and racial equality. It’s part of the DNA of this league.”He then said changes could come in how that commitment is manifested. EL PASO, Texas - A cathedral in El Paso was vandalized while the church was open and available for prayer Tuesday morning.The Diocese of El Paso says a suspect came into the sanctuary at St. Patrick Cathedral around 10 a.m. and destroyed an almost 90-year-old statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was located in the center behind the main altar.“I am in shock and we at the Cathedral are heartbroken over such an unexpected situation,” said The Rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, Fr. Trini Fuentes.The suspect has been detained by the El Paso Police Department, officials said.“This statue is one of my favorite representations of Jesus—his arms open wide in welcome, his heart aflame with love for us. I would often take inspiration from this image as I prepared for Mass,” said Bishop Seitz. “As sad as I am to see a statue attacked and destroyed, I am grateful that it was not a living person. But a statue, particularly this statue, concretizes and connects us to persons and ideals that are not visible to our eyes. They reveal to us realities that are close to us, but unseen."Officers are currently continuing their investigation into the vandalism.“At this point we do not know anything about the person who carried out this assault, but he certainly must be a person who is greatly disturbed to have attacked this peaceful place in our city and this image of the King of Peace.
