ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - California's nearly 3-year-old ban on single-use plastic bags may be having an unintended impact: a spike in shoplifting. In late June at Major Market in Escondido - just before closing time - two women are recorded sauntering down the liquor aisle, before they begin stuffing their bags. "They're putting in our high-end champagne. About a bottle," said night manager John Kuper.By the time they're done, they collect seven bottles of champagne and one bottle of vodka."They didn't establish eye contact when I said goodbye to them. Their purses looked awfully full," said Kuper.Kuper says when he later looked at the video, he saw them walk out without paying. "Makes me sick to my stomach. That's your profit coming out of the registers there ... We believe the same women may have come in a month before and stolen champagne," says Kuper.Kuper's market is not the only one feeling the pain, as these scenes become more and more common. The Neighborhood Market Association estimates shoplifting losses at local groceries has climbed from 25% to 30% since the ban became law in 2016. Kuper says with so many customers now bringing in their own bags, spotting shoplifters is a big challenge."If they walk out with their own bags, we can't check every bag," said Kuper.Hiring extra security at the door is pricey and risks alienating customers. And so, the thefts keep coming, along with profit losses. Store owners tell 10news those losses ultimately mean higher prices. 1509

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who abandoned a vehicle after striking and killing a cyclist Saturday in Escondido. The cyclist was identified Monday as Kevin Lentz of Vista, a married father of a 1-year-old son, according to Escondido Police Lt. Scott Walters and friends of Lentz. The 36-year-old Lentz was cycling with a group on La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway when he was hit head-on Saturday around noon, according to the Escondido Police Department.RELATED: Bicyclist killed in Escondido hit-and-run crash“The driver of the car was on the wrong side of the road, traveling at high speed on a blind curve when he hit Kevin head-on, killing him instantly,” wrote Devin Rickey on a GoFundMe page set up for Lentz’ family.Officers found the dark Toyota sedan abandoned a half-mile away, in the 600 block of Aster Street. The vehicle had significant damage to the windshield and roof.Lentz was an avid cyclist who raced competitively for the TASCO MTB mountain bike team before scaling back his riding to spend more time with family, friends said. ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) - An albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" is back home.A man wearing a hood and backpack returned the snake on May 16 to the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido. Museum officials believe Lemony disappeared on April 29. The snake was dehydrated and had not been fed. It was also full of mites. Lemony will undergo a 30-day quarantine.RELATED: Snake named 'Lemony Snicket' missing after unfortunate events at Escondido museumThe boa disappeared after a series of — ahem, "unfortunate" — events during a tour at the children's museum. Lemony was taken out of its cage for guests, before being locked back up.During the tour, however, museum officials said a man in his 20s excused himself from the group never to return. Later in the day, they said the boa was missing.A security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was also inoperable. Earlier the same day, the camera broke. A security expert said it appeared the camera was knocked out by some type of electrical charge. The museum said it would not press any charges against the person they believe to have taken the snake. 1144
