SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was armed with a gun when he beat, choked and raped two women in 2016 on consecutive nights was sentenced Tuesday.Jeremiah Ira Williams, 26, was sentenced to 100 years to life, plus 86 year, in state prison after being convicted on May 1 of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, burglary and making a criminal threat.Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador told jurors that Williams followed the first victim from a parking structure to her apartment on August 13 of 2016.Jane Doe 1 was afraid when Williams asked her "Where's your husband?" as she approached her front door, the prosecutor said.Williams then knocked her down, robbed her at gunpoint and choked her, Amador said. Once inside, Williams beat the victim before raping her and forcing her to take a shower before he left.The following day, Williams beat and raped a woman working as a prostitute after meeting up with her at a motel in Grantville.Williams got on the bed and asked Jane Doe 2, "Do you want to know what it feels like to die?" He then choked the victim until "she saw stars," then raped and sodomized her, according to Amador, who said the woman was so terrified that she broke a window and jumped through it to get away.Williams’ attorney, Deputy Public Defender Thomas Bahr, told the jury that police had a feeling the two rapes were connected and jumped to conclusions.Bahr alleged that Jane Doe 2 lied throughout the investigation, arguing that her story had inconsistencies.The defense attorney alleged that Jane Doe 2 asked a detective “Can I Sue him (Williams) for beating my (expletive.)” 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds announced layoffs Thursday amid the coronavirus pandemic.According to the fairgrounds, staffing will be reduced by 58 percent due to a loss of revenue."Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent ban on mass gatherings, the 22nd District Agricultural Association|Del Mar Fairgrounds (22nd DAA) has suffered severe financial losses to its income streams."The fairgrounds says since March, revenues have fallen by 66 percent "Combined with the postponement of the San Diego County Fair and no patrons for this year’s summer horse racing meet, revenues are estimated to be down 92 percent by the end of the summer."The fairgrounds will give employees 120 days of continued employement with an official layoff date of October 15.“It is with a heavy heart that we must make the difficult decision to reduce staffing at this time,” said Tim Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “Until it is safe to host events again, reducing our staffing levels is crucial to the survival of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronavirus Pandemic has had an unexpectedly positive effect on the Helen Woodward Animal Center, as pet adoptions have doubled over the past week."This is a fabulous time to bring animals into your home," says Jessica Gercke, the spokesperson for the HWAC.Gercke says the Center has seen a surge in people applying for adoption and fostering because they're working from home, and have more time to integrate a new pet into the family."We're seeing a lot of teachers and graduate students," says Gercke, noting that many had planned to wait until summer break, but moved up their adoptions because of the extra time at home.That's what led Anna Fairman, a Carlsbad Kindergarten teacher, to adopt last Thursday. She took home a new dog, Archie."I had had this plan that I was gonna adopt a dog at the beginning of this summer so that I could obviously have time to spend with the dog and train it," she says. "Now, just seemed like the perfect time."The HWAC is doing its part to keep the adoptions as safe as possible. They're only letting one person in at a time, with appointments set up in advance. Each person is allowed to interact with up to three animals to decide which one to take home.For fostering, the HWAC is doing video chat calls to inspect the homes of people wishing to foster and make sure they're safe and appropriate for the pets. They're also doing online training for potential foster families."We're seeing this beautiful, beautiful love that animals give to us," says Gercke. "It lowers blood pressure.
