SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Coronavirus cases on the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt are multiplying quickly. On Thursday, Department of Defense officials announced 23 sailors have now tested positive for COVID-19. Officials say they have mild symptoms, fever and a cough. The aircraft carrier left her San Diego homeport in January for a seven-month deployment with roughly 5,000 sailors are on board. The carrier's last stop was in Vietnam more than two weeks ago. ElderHelp has been helping seniors with anything from giving rides to grocery shopping for decades. Now, they have adapted to COVID-19 restrictions, with a system where volunteers pick up groceries from the nonprofit's hub, then drive the food and supplies to the seniors’ homes to deliver without contact.ElderHelp has seen a 773% increase in requests for service since the pandemic began and now completes 522 deliveries on average every week.Carol Greene is one of the seniors who has food delivered to her San Diego home and said the communication with the staff brightens her days.“I look at ElderHelp as all the sunshine. You might be at home on your normal, boring day at times and whoop there’s the phone,” she said.They just received a 0,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation but say they are still always in need of both donations and volunteers, especially in light of the recent increase in demand.Nicole Darling has been volunteering with ElderHelp since 2003 and said the seniors appreciate the food, but always seem to enjoy the interaction as well, especially during a time of isolation.“It’s a small amount of effort to make a huge amount of good for people who are really vulnerable and alone,” said Darling. 1382

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility.The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. This is an environmental nightmare and extremely dangerous with the rainy season rapidly approaching.”More than 100 homeless encampments were counted by volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation in October. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Crowds are already flocking to San Diego beaches for the Fourth of July weekend.On Friday, many people claimed their spots early at Mission Beach and Oceanside.While some were able to keep their distance from one another, many did not have on facial coverings when near other people.“The majority of them are not wearing masks, I would say at this point in time,” said Rich Stropky, Marine Safety Lieutenant for San Diego lifeguards.He said more people are expected to make their way to San Diego Saturday as other Southern California beaches will be closed.Law enforcement agencies across San Diego have said they will focus on education, rather than enforcement when someone violates the public health order.He said the parking lots at Mission Beach were full by noon Friday.“As far as the capacity for our beaches, what has limited capacity in the past is the ability to park,” he said. “How far are people willing to park and still walk to the beach? Are they going to Uber in? Are they going to do drop-offs?”Stropky urged beachgoers to talk to lifeguards if they have any questions and to follow the public health order and original beach rules.“We have our COVID safety guidelines, and we want everyone to adhere to that,” he said. “We have our beach regulations; there’s no glass, there’s no dogs between 9 and 6, there’s no camping.”There’s also a beach hazard statement in effect this weekend.
