LA JOLLA, California — A long-time animal rights activist who has filmed seals and sea lions harassed in La Jolla says people are not getting the message.Andrea Hahn has filmed the animals every day since 1994. Footage from Sunday she says showed some of the worst behavior she has witnessed in recent months: a woman with a shovel disrupting pregnant mothers on the beach.Another video shows a grieving sea lion mother with her stillborn pup. It has generated over 100 million hits according to Hahn. She says the pregnant mothers are delivering more stillborn pups because people are not giving them proper space. She has even witnessed tourists stepping on the pups.  "People are not getting it. Tourists think because they paid money to get here they have the right to grapple with the animals. There are perfectly good laws on the books and people are ignoring them and the government is not enforcing the laws," said Hahn.A "no-selfie" sign was recently posted at South Casa Beach. It was posted to remind visitors that sea lions and the seals are protected by federal law, monitored by park rangers, and it's illegal to disturb them.  Access to the Children's Pool is closed due to pupping season but is set to reopen in May. "Right now that area is safe and quiet for them. It should be closed for good," Hahn said. 1391

Lawmakers around the country are considering passing legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.Those for and against have voiced their opinions. But now, three teachers in Michigan are putting the concept to the test.Three teachers — one who’s never shot a gun before and two concealed pistol license (CPL) holders — agreed to be put through an active shooter drill.“I’m a little nervous,” said Bob Fite. “I usually shoot at paper plates and at the gun range.”Fite has been a high school social studies teacher for 35 years. He is also a CPL holder.This active shooter training drill is what police use. Think of it as a big screen video game, except this scenario is all too real.Fite had his finger on the trigger the whole time, which is dangerous. But he still hesitated to shoot and when he did, he missed the mark.“There are lockers in the background. If that’s kids in the background, we got a problem,” he said.“It’s a very touchy subject, and I don’t know where I stand. I really don’t,” said Chad Keisel is a high school biology teacher of 24 years.He’s never shot a gun before. In the first training scenario, Chad was shot without even hitting the gunman.“I thought it was only one guy, how easy is that? But if there’s kids running around in the background, I would not shoot,” he said.Katherine Montie has only been a high school math teacher for a few months. She’s a CPL holder and during the practice round, it was clear she was a great shot.In the first scenario, she kept calm and killed the suspect.But in the second scenario, she didn’t realize there was more than one suspect that shot back at her. She was “killed” before she could hit one of the shooter.“If I knew those students, that would have been a completely different situation, for sure,” she said.Allen Park Police Sgt. Wayne Albright facilitated thie drill. He teaches students and school staff on the ALICE method, which doesn’t involve guns.ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Students and staff are trained to use a lockdown method while hiding under desks or furniture during a shooting or being proactive and doing whatever it takes to keep the shooter out of the room, or if unable to do so, using counter measure and evacuating.For more information on Alice, click hereSgt. Albright says teachers may not be able to handle emotional stress that comes with this type of training.“You learn to distance yourself and separate your feelings from the actual scene. I don’t think teachers have been trained to do that,” he explained. “They don’t have to. They have a connection with those kids because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”After the drill, the teachers expressed concern.“I was shaking. I can feel it in my knees. I can feel it in my elbows,” Keisel explained. “It kind of froze me for a second and that was somebody I didn’t even know. And it wasn’t even real.”If armed, the teachers say they’re not comfortable leaving their students in a classroom, while risking their own lives to hunt down a shooter.“I would like to say I would be the hero, but I don’t know if I would be,” Keisel added.“I would be locked down in my room making sure that nobody came through that door,” Fite said.Being smaller in stature, Montie says if she were armed in the classroom, her mind would constantly be on her gun.“What if one of my students tries to take that gun from me? Then you aren’t even thinking about an active shooter, you’re just thinking about every other day of the year,” she said.One thing all three teachers agree, the training has to be extensive. ut they question where the funding would come from.“I think it’s not as easy as hand teachers a gun, they are already there anyway they can just neutralize any threats because they all have guns and training,” Keisel said. “Come and try this and then answer the question, if it’s a wise thing?" Fite said.A bill has been introduced into the Michigan state House that would allow teachers to carry a gun at school. The teachers we spoke with say even if the bill passes, they hope lawmakers will focus on additional security measures, not just arming teachers. 4269

LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. (KGTV) - A wellness center in La Mesa is accused of misleading patients by illegally marketing a breast cancer screening device, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).This week, the FDA issued a formal warning to Total Thermal Imaging Inc. and its president and co-owner, Linda Hayes, for illegally marketing and distributing an unapproved thermography device as a sole screening device for breast cancer and other diseases, according to a press release.Thermography is heat-sensitive imaging depicted in variations of color.10News spoke to San Diego's Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness organization, which says thermography alone is not enough. “It can be used in addition to a mammogram or other screening tool that has been shown effective but there hasn't been any scientific evidence for thermography right now being a standalone tool,” says Lizzie Wittig, Director of Mission Initiatives and Public Policy.The FDA is demanding a response within 15 working days.No one at the clinic answered the door. 10News called and sent messages, and got this text reply: "Total Thermal Imaging Inc. is reviewing the warning letter from the FDA and developing a response. We will work with the agency to ensure our products comply with acceptable regulations." This isn't the first time that a clinic has gotten a warning letter about thermography. LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label.
