LOS ANGELES, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of homes were evacuated on Wednesday in Monument, U.S. state of Colorado after hydrochloric acid was leaking from a train car, authorities said.The leak was first reported around 1 a.m. local time when a southbound train spotted a vapor trail on a northbound train, the Denver Post reported.Authorities first ordered the evacuation of some 255 homes, and later expanded the evacuation to an additional 160 homes, according to the report.Schools in the area were closed due to the leaking, the report said.A specialized crew from Texas has been dispatched to the scene to transfer the hydrochloric acid leaking from the train car and is expected to finish the job in four or five hours, weather permitting, the report quoted Sgt. Mike Schaller of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office as saying.The leak is contained but hydrochloric acid is still leaking slowly from the tanker, which holds 25,000-30,000 gallons, Schaller said.He said police went door-to-door notifying residents of a subdivision adjacent to the railroad tracks to evacuate as a precaution.No injuries have been reported, he said, but residents have been warned that they may have to be out of their homes until Friday as hazardous material crews offload the acid to another container.The northbound train originated in Kansas and was en route to Denver at the time, the Denver Post said.It's not yet known how much hydrochloric acid leaked from the train car.Once the leak is sealed, crews will remove the hydrochloric acid from the damaged car to a new car that will likely continue into Denver, according to the report.Monument is a town of 3,230 residents 88 kilometers south of Denver.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Google Inc. on Monday announced that it is bidding for patent portfolio of Nortel Networks in the bankruptcy auction for the Canadian telecommunications equipment maker.In a press release, the Toronto-based Nortel said Google has agreed to buy all of its remaining patents and patent applications for 900 million U.S. dollars in cash.Nortel, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009, expects the auction to be held in June this year, pending Canadian and U.S. court approvals.Nortel has selected Google's bid as the "stalking-horse bid," or the starting point against which others will bid prior to the auction.The agreement with Google includes the planned sale of about 6, 000 Nortel patents and patent applications spanning wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, Internet, service provider and semiconductors.According to Nortel, the patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets, including Internet search and social networking."This is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire one of the most extensive and compelling patent portfolios to ever come on the market," George Riedel, Nortel's chief strategy officer, said in a statement.Google argued that the bid would help protect it from patent litigation and foster innovation.The technology industry has recently seen an explosion in patent litigation, often involving low-quality software patents, which threatens to stifle innovation, Kent Walker, Google's general counsel, said in a blog post, believing the best defense against such litigation is to have a "formidable patent portfolio. BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- China will impose tax on the one-off subsidy to people taking early retirement, the State Administration of Taxation (SAT) said Sunday.The SAT said the early retirement subsidy, which is not tax-free retirement income, should be imposed with personal income tax.However, the tax will be calculated after the subsidy is divided by the months between the date of the completion of retirement formalities and the corresponding legal retirement date, the SAT said.

The forth Airbus A340 plane with 275 evacuees on board took off from the Malta International Airport at about 08:40 p.m. local time (1940GMT), bringing the total number of Chinese nationals back home from Malta to 2,223.The flight CES 266 with 275 Chinese nationals on board flew to Beijing while the other three will land in Shanghai, according to Chinese Embassy in Malta.Three chartered flights are expected on Tuesday, the embassy said.In the past 48 hours, three chartered cruise ship with 4,800 Chinese evacuees have reached Valletta, capital of Malta.
