BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday personally conveyed National Day greetings to elderly scientists who have made prominent contributions to atomic and medical research.     China's National Day this year will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of modern China. Premier Wen first visited Zhu Guangya, a nuclear physicist and one of the key scientists engaged in producing the first of China's atomic and hydrogen bombs between the 1950s and 1960s.     "You have devoted your whole life to the development of the country and service to the people. We will remember you with concern forever," Wen told 85-year-old Zhu. NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India's ruling Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA), Friday expressed her wish that relations between India and China can be enhanced with common efforts by the two countries.     During a meeting with visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Gandhi said that there exists a very solid basis for developing friendly and cooperative relations between India and China. Dai conveyed cordial greeting and good wishes from General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President Hu Jintao, who also expressed his congratulations to the Congress party and the UPA for successfully winning a second term of government in the general elections this year. He said that President Gandhi has personally made great efforts for the development of Sino-Indian relations as leader of the UPA and the Congress party.     Dai also said China is willing to make common efforts with India to upgrade the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership to a new level.     Gandhi also memorized the 1988 historic visit to China by her late husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as well as her attendance of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.     She expressed her wish that as the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China is nearing, the peoples of India and China, especially the youth of the two countries, increase human exchanges to build a good social foundation for furthering friendship between the two countries.     Dai and Gandhi also exchanged views on strengthening friendly ties between the Communist Party of China and the Congress party of India.

WASHINGTON, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), the first of its kind between the world's biggest developing country and biggest developed country, opened here on Monday.     On behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao and invited by U.S. President Barack Obama, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo participated in the opening ceremony in Ronald Reagan Building in downtown Washington, D.C..     In a congratulatory message to the opening ceremony of the dialogue read by Wang, Chinese President Hu Jintao said that both China and the United States shoulder important responsibilities on a host of major issues concerning peace and development of mankind.     As two countries with significant influence in the world, China and the United States also enjoy extensive common interests and broad space for cooperation, Hu said.     China and the United States, in the face of the complex and changing international economic and political situation, should endeavor to expand common ground, reduce differences, enhance mutual trust and strengthen cooperation through the Strategic and Economic Dialogue, he said. ISLAMABAD, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said here Friday that he is proud of Pakistan's brotherly relationship with China and wishes the Chinese around the world well.     Zardari was the chief guest at the National Day reception hosted by Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui at the Chinese embassy.     Replying a question by Xinhua on his arrival, Zardari said, "For the Chinese around the world, I wish them well. I wish them their independence and I applaud the success."     He also said, "I'm proud of the friendship which we have with China. And I'm proud of our brotherly relationship. And I'm with them in this moment of happiness. The people of Pakistan share the moments of happiness with the people of China."     Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, government officials and senior diplomats from other embassies based in Islamabad were present at the reception.     The guests watched dances, songs and acrobatics performed by Chinese troops. At the end of the performance, chief guests and the Chinese ambassador went on the stage to greet the performers and had a group photo with them. 

BEIJING, Oct.17 (Xinhua) -- China's civil aviation industry made profits of 9.1 billion yuan (about 1.33 billions U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of 2009, despite the punch by the financial crisis on the world's civil aviation industry, said the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on Saturday.     Domestic air passenger traffic volume grew by 23.6 percent from a year earlier in first nine months of this year.     Performance of small airports, those that handle less than 1 million passengers annually, were most inspiring, said Li Jiaxiang, director with the CAAC, at the 2009 China International General Aviation Convention held in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Saturday.     Li said that passenger volume of small airports grew 26.7 percent year on year to 14.87 million in the first half.     He contributed the vibrant performance of small airports and regional air routes to the more balanced economic development of China's different regions in recent years, which was the result of the country's strategies to develop the relatively poor western and central regions and to revive the old industrial base in northeastern regions.     Besides, the fact that Chinese people are becoming richer and CAAC's policies carried out last year to subsidize small and medium-sized airports and regional air routes also helped the passenger volume rise of small airports, said Li.     By the end of 2008, China had 116 small airports, accounting for 73 percent of the total number of the country's airports.
