CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- When you ask Chula Vista City councilman Steve Padilla what he learned during 2020, he'll say it was to appreciate the little things in life. Things like valuing every moment and never take time for granted. ABC 10News caught up with Padilla as part of our Positively San Diego, A Season of Hope series. Padilla beat COVID-19 after spending weeks in the ICU, 11 days on a ventilator. Padilla says the love and support of the community has been overwhelming. After beating COVID-19 and weeks of recovery, Padilla got back to work as city councilman, while also campaigning for reelection. He won his reelection by a landslide. The councilman says he is incredibly thankful for the healthcare workers still battling this pandemic, especially the ones that saved his life. While he says he's looking forward to the new year and being able to hug people he hasn't hugged in months, he recognizes there is still so much work to be done before the pandemic is under control. 1008

CINCINNATI -- A school bus crash Monday afternoon on Winton Road in Cincinnati left a 12-year-old girl in "critical" condition, flung a 2-year-old boy onto the road and resulted in the hospitalization of at least 18 other children, according to Lt. Steve Saunders.At least 11 children, including the seriously injured boy and girl, were taken away in ambulances Monday afternoon after the Pleasant Hill Academy bus and four other vehicles collided around 2:30 p.m. Nine others were taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after their parents took them there to be checked out."I was devastated," parent Latisha McKelton said of the moment she heard about the crash. "I didn’t know what was wrong with my child. I just had to jump in the first moving vehicle and get here as fast as I could to my child. I didn't know if he was injured. I didn't know if he was going to be alive. I just didn't know. I was praying the whole way."According to a news release from Cincinnati police, a total of around 40 people were involved in the crash.Police said the bus was traveling southbound on Winton when a northbound vehicle driven by 23-year-old Robert Jett made an ill-fated attempt to pass the vehicle in front of him.Jett lost control of his car and struck another, this one driven by Jordan Ervin and transporting a pair of toddlers. Ervin's vehicle spun out of control and hit the bus; bus driver Tina Turnbow attempted to control her spinning vehicle and struck a fourth car, this one driven by LeAndre Acoff.Ervin was hospitalized in serious condition, as were his two passengers: The 2-year-old and a 1-year-old.The injured 12-year-old had been riding in the school bus at the time of the crash, according to the release. A district assistant superintendent went to Children's Hospital to help families there. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are affected by this," Saunders said.He added charges were pending against Jett. 2010

(KGTV) -- Hope, peace, unity and love are some of the simple words painted on rocks that Maria Gutierrez walked by each morning."I was thankful and I would look for more and more stones," Maria said.Maria just moved to the neighborhood and was surprised to learn who was behind those painted messages."One day I was walking my dogs and I saw Ava carrying a couple of stones and just quietly putting one down," Maria described.Ava is her neighbor, an 8-year-old doing her part in lifting others in difficult times."I’s because a lot of people aren’t happy right now. My mom and I were trying to make the people in our neighborhood happy," said Ava.I asked Ava what works like hope meant for her and she replied, "if someone doesn’t think they can do something, there’s hope they’ll make it."Her mom Cyndi said others neighbors have joined in their "rocks of hope" movement."We noticed other stones placed around the tree. It was cool because other people starting doing it as well," Cyndi said.Maria moved to Eastlake last month and said Ava's efforts showed how helpful and hopeful her neighborhood could be."It made me smile and I didn't really know anybody here. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of fatally stabbing a man during a road-rage dispute in the South Bay is due in court for pre-trial motions Monday. Rickey Smith, 60, is accused of stabbing 36-year-old Horace Williams to death as Williams sat in his van. According to police, the incident happened on November 27, 2018 along Sweetwater Road. Witnesses told police Smith was following Williams’ van as the two yelled at each other. RELATED: Man accused of killing driver in South Bay road rage incident pleads not guiltySmith’s pickup then reportedly hit the van from behind before Smith pulled in front of the van, slamming on the brakes. Witnesses told police the maneuver caused the crash. Police say Smith then got out of his truck and stabbed Williams. Smith, a father of five who had just dropped several of his children off at school, died at the scene. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A suspected drunk driver had to be pulled from a vehicle after a rollover crash in the South Bay overnight.Police said the driver drove into two parked cars while driving southbound on Broadway at about 2 a.m. Saturday. After hitting one vehicle, her vehicle rolled into the middle of the street.The vehicle she struck collided with a nearby SUV, police said.Emergency crews extricated the woman from her vehicle and took her to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.Chula Vista Police later arrested the woman for driving under the influence.No one else was injured in the crash. 620
