SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. "We have to teach our kids that life is hard and life is a struggle."The port added that it's not currently accepting new art proposals for the Embarcadero because of redevelopment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two competing plans are on the table to redevelop the Tailgate Lot a block from Petco Park into a mixed-use area with park space, retail and office, and housing.The City of San Diego has launched a virtual open house for residents to provide feedback on two plans to develop the Tailgate Lot in a mixed-use area. Residents have through Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, to give their feedback.One of the plans was developed by Brookfield Properties and the other between the San Diego Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital. Both plans call for a combination of office, retail, and residential space and open park space and parking.Brookfield Properties' plan calls for about 1.2 million square feet of mixed-use office and retail space, about 1,200 residential units, and 1.1 acres of park and community space. The plan also highlights developing a tailgate park, "bazaar" marketplace, and a gateway to public transit.Brookfield's plan also includes a culinary incubator for restaurant startups and makers, including 15 restaurant spaces and a community kitchen.The plan by the Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital also features about 1.35 million square feet of office space, 612 market rate and affordable housing units, 236,000 square feet of open space, and 1,600-space parking garage for games and ballpark events.The parking garage would also include a multi-use field on the roof for recreational activities. The plan says that the spaces will be shared with tenants when not in use for games and events.The Tailgate Lot property includes 15 parcels of land, or about 5.25 net acres, between K Street and Imperial Avenue and 12th Ave. and 14th St. The parking is currently leased to the Padres.The city's plan is to submit an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement to City Council in October or November 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people have been arrested for the fire that destroyed a Chase Bank during unrest in La Mesa last May.FBI San Diego said 19-year-old Alexander Jacob King and 33-year-old Ricky Bernard Cooper were arrested on Monday and charged with arson of a structure in connection with the bank fire. King was also charged with one count of looting and Cooper is facing four separate counts of looting related to various La Mesa businesses.On May 30, FBI investigators say the fire was set at the Chase Bank at 4791 Spring St., causing extensive damage to the building. Since the fire, investigators from La Mesa Police, San Diego Police, and the San Diego FBI have been piecing together evidence leading to Monday's arrests."While peaceful protest is a right protected by the U.S. Constitution and a time-honored tradition in our country, violent criminal activity, including arson and looting, will not be tolerated," the FBI said in a release announcing the arrests.Last May, demonstrators marched through the city and gathered outside of La Mesa Police Department to protest the arrest of an African American man by a white LMPD officer caught on video. The protest followed a week of demonstrations around the country stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody.Later that night, protests turned violent as rioters set several fires, and damaged and looted businesses. 1422
