Nearly a full year after the season started, the 2020-21 NHL season finally came to a close with the Tampa Bay Lightning winning its first Stanley Cup in 16 years by defeating the Dallas Stars on Monday. The Lightning won the best-of-seven series 4-2 after winning Monday’s Game 6 contest by a 2-0 ledger. The Lightning won the Stanley Cup despite not having the services of its top forward Steven Stamkos for most of the playoffs. Stamkos briefly played in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and he even scored a goal in his short appearance. The NHL suspended its season on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic. After a nearly four-month hiatus, the NHL resumed action with a 24-team playoff held in two “hub” cities – Edmonton and Toronto. The entirety of the Stanley Cup Finals was played in Edmonton.Stepping up for the absent Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point helped the Lightning to victory. Kucherov had a league-leading 32 points in the playoffs, followed by 31 points for Point. But it was defender Victor Hedman who won the the Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoff's most valuable player. The Lightning’s goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy, also stepped up with an under 2 goals against average. The Lightning’s Stanley Cup victory avenged the ending to the Lightning’s 2019 season. After winning last year’s Presidents’ Trophy, the Lightning was swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the playoffs. Columbus was the last team from the Eastern Conference to make the playoffs last year. 1519

National Rifle Association board member and classic rocker Ted Nugent slammed survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, calling them "liars" and "poor, mushy-brained children."Nugent made the comments during an interview on "The Joe Pags Show," a nationally syndicated conservative radio program."All you have to do now is not only feel sorry for the liars, but you have to go against them and pray to God that the lies can be crushed and the liars can be silenced so that real measures can be put into place to actually save children's lives," Nugent said about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students."These poor children, I'm afraid to say this and it hurts me to say this, but the evidence is irrefutable, they have no soul," he added. 768

Mortgage rates have been low for months, but currently, about 19 million homeowners who are eligible to refinance haven't cashed in.According to data analytics firm Black Knight, these homeowners have a credit score of 720 or more and at least 20% equity in their homes. They could save nearly 0 a month on average.A new survey by YouGov for Forbes Advisor found that 34% of homeowners say they’re not sure refinancing is worth it.A mortgage analyst at Forbes Advisor says one reason people may be hesitant is they don't want to deal with banks that are overloaded with applications right now.“Borrowers really need to advocate for themselves, so make sure that you call your lender if you haven't heard from them in over a week let’s say or just really stay on top of it and at the end of the day. If you're not getting the service that you want, there are many other lenders that would be happy to get your business,” said Natalie Campisi, Mortgage Analyst at Forbes Advisor.Another reason you should act now if you've been considering refinancing, is there's a new fee. It starts on December 1, but your loan may not be processed before then if you don't start the process now.“What you want to do is talk to your lender,” said Campisi. “If you decide to apply for a loan, ask them, say you know will you roll this fee into the cost of my loan, which some lenders are doing, and find out some lenders might be able to process your application before December 1.”Campisi says you can benefit the most from refinancing if you're not planning to move within the next few years. Also, if you have more than 10 years left on your mortgage. You also need to consider closing costs that can average around ,000. Most experts recommend you need to be saving at least 0 a month to make those costs worth it. 1816

Mourners gathered Thursday night in Washington's Dupont Circle to remember the gay college student whose murder changed the way we think about hate crimes, and call attention to the battles that remain. It's been 20 years since Matthew Shepard was robbed, pistol-whipped and tied to a fence by two men he met in a bar in Laramie, Wyoming. He was left in the freezing cold overnight, and a cyclist who thought he was a scarecrow discovered him. He later died in a hospital.Shepard's ashes will be interred Friday at the Washington National Cathedral -- the only place where his parents felt they would be safe from desecration. His death galvanized the LGBTQ civil rights movement, leading to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also named for a black man who was killed by three white supremacists in Texas.Speakers at Thursday's candlelight vigil told those in attendance that the fight continues for equal rights and treatment for the LGBTQ community, especially transgender and gender-nonconforming people. The world is a different place than it was when Shepard was killed, said Rev. V. Gene Robinson, who will carry his ashes and preside over Friday's service."But the kind of hatred and violence that killed Matthew Shephard is alive and well and living in this country," Robinson told CNN affiliate WJLA."We've grown more likely to label some people 'other' and treat them horribly. ... Every good person I know needs to stand up and say that's not who we are," Robinson said.Several speakers drew attention to the plight of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, who are protected under the hate crimes act, but have lost other protections under the Trump administration. With the din of traffic humming in the background, one speaker read aloud the names of 28 transgender people killed in 2018."Today, we can change our gender marker on our IDs but we can lose our lives on the streets of these cities simply by someone finding out that we are transgender," another speaker said.A recent New York Times report of an administration proposal to exclude transgender people from anti-discrimination laws stoked fears of more losses. Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, called on the gay community to stand with transgender people in their fight for legal protections from discrimination."We can't just say the 'T' at the other end of the initials and not do the hard work of getting to know them and love them and then stand with them," he said. 2534
