SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Condo and townhome sales increased more than 7 percent from April to May in San Diego County, while single-family home sales held steady, the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors reported Monday. Attached property sales increased 7.3 percent from 983 in April to 1,055 in May. Month-over-month sales of single-family homes increased by just 0.7 percent from 2,023 in April to 2,037 in May. Property sales, which plunged during the winter, have had steady increases since January. The price of single-family homes rose 1.2 percent from 2,200 in April to 0,000 in May. Attached property prices grew 3.3 percent from 0,000 in April to 4,000 in May. ``Sellers still have the upper hand in this market,'' said SDAR President Kevin Burke. ``However, buyers who take the time to research neighborhoods should find more homes for sale than they would have a year ago.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner.On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. "You won't believe it. These two 0 bills are counterfeit. We marked them, and they're not coming in," said Whittingham.Meanwhile, Wagner's bills were also raising suspicions."I couldn't them unstuck to count them," said Wagner. It was extreme disbelief," said Wagner, who filed a report with the sheriff's department.He says there was disbelief, partly because the counterfeit bills look very real except for a few differences."There is no watermark on the fakes. They are also less gritty when you touch them," said Wagner.Of course, the identical serial numbers give the fakes away. 10News compared the bills received by both men, and those fake serial numbers matched. Questions linger. Where did the money come from? How many other customers got the bills? And how did the money slip past Walmart's safeguards?"I never figured going into Walmart, counterfeit money would be floating," said Whittingham.Whittingham did get his money back from Walmart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described.The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said.They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described.She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798
