SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility.The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews were able to extinguish a fire in Clairemont Friday afternoon reportedly started by a crash. According to California Highway Patrol, the blaze started on Boyd Avenue near Genesee Avenue. San Diego Police say at 5:24, a suspect hit several vehicles on Balboa and Mount Alifan Drive before taking off. RELATED: Check today's San Diego County forecastThe suspect then lost a tire, creating sparks and starting the blaze. The suspect was later taken into custody. The fire sparked just as a Red Flag Warning in parts of San Diego County was allowed to expire. 590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Clothing retailer Forever 21 announced Tuesday it may close three stores in San Diego County as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. The affected locations, which include Fashion Valley, University Towne Center, and Parkway Plaza in El Cajon, could be shut down "pending the outcome of continued conversations with landlords,” according to court documents. Attorneys also said the list of store closures could change pending restructuring efforts.Forever 21 has 800 stores worldwide and plans to close almost 200. "We do however expect a significant number of these stores will remain open and operate as usual, and we do not expect to exit any major markets in the US," the company said. The chain was founded in 1984 in a small Los Angeles store by South Korean immigrants Do Won Chang and his wife, Jin Sook. The chain expanded quickly in suburban malls, and catering to young girls and women with a mix of inexpensive basics.
