FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. The rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters, the meteorologists forecast.     Offshore, winds could increase to force 12, while in the coastal cities, force 7 to 9 winds were expected, according to the latest forecast of the provincial meteorological station.     Torrential rains were forecast to hit the cities of Ningde, Putian and Quanzhou as well as the provincial capital Fuzhou. HONG KONG, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Mainland-based telecommunications giants China Unicom and China Netcom, both listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, announced Monday that each share of Netcom will be exchanged for 1.508 Unicom shares in a proposed merger. The rate was based on the price of China Netcom shares on the Hong Kong mainboard before their suspension from trading on May 23, with a 3 percent premium, said Tong Jilu, executive director and chief financial officer of China Unicom.     Chang Xiaobing, chairman and chief executive officer of China Unicom, also said each American depository share of China Netcom will be exchanged for 3.016 American depository shares of the new China Unicom, subject to shareholders' approval. China Unicom also said it reached a framework agreement with China Telecom under which China Telecom will buy CDMA business and CDMA network from China Unicom Group.     The merger is expected to be completed in October this year after the shareholders' conferences in September if everything went ahead smoothly, Tong said.     The merged group, possibly bearing the name of China Unicom, will have an enlarged capital of 23.76 billion shares, worth a total of 439.17 billion yuan (63.28 billion U.S. dollars). It is expected to be a provider of integrated services including mobile and fixed-line telecommunications, broadband, data and value-added services.     "The merger is in line with the trend of convergence of fixed- line and mobile networks, and is expected to enable the merged group to set clear strategy," Chang said, referring to the direction for the company to pursue 3G strength.     China Unicom, currently one of the telecommunications giants in the Chinese mainland, is a far second to the largest mobile carrier China Mobile, while China Netcom is a provider of fixed line telecommunications and broadband services.     The merger was currently between the Hong Kong-listed China Unicom Limited and the China Netcom Group Corporation (Hong Kong) Limited, but not a merger between their mother companies, Chang told a press conference held in Hong Kong.     China Netcom will cease to exist as a listed firm after the merger, subject to approval from the shareholders at the company's annual conference, which is expected in September, said Zuo Xunsheng, chairman and chief executive officer of China Netcom.     Shares of both companies will resume trading on Hong Kong exchange on Tuesday.     The merger was part of a major regrouping in the Chinese telecom industry aimed at more competition by forming three providers of integrated services after regrouping.     State authorities issued an announcement on May 24, saying that they "encouraged" a regrouping of the telecom corporations to form three providers of integrated services to increase market competition. China Mobile has recently announced a proposal to buy fixed-line operator China Tietong, or Railway Telecommunications.     At a separate press conference in Hong Kong on Monday, the HongKong listed China Telecom announced that it has reached an agreement to buy the CDMA services of China Unicom, thus making it one of the three integrated services providers, too.     China Unicom also announced at the conference that it will sell its CDMA services at 43.8 billion yuan (6.31 billion U.S. dollars)and that its mother firm China Unicom Group will sell its CDMA network at 66.2 billion yuan (9.54 billion U.S. dollars) to China Telecommunications Corporation, the mother firm of China Telecom.     Speaking at a separate press conference in Hong Kong, Wang Xiaochu, chairman and chief executive officer of China Telecom, said that the deal is expected to be completed in October, subject to shareholder approval at annual conferences in September.     China Telecom will pay for the transaction in cash, Wang said, adding that he expected the CDMA part to contribute net profit as early as 2012, although the deal could impact the earnings record of the company in short term.     The regrouping will result in three separate providers of integrated services, with most of the analysts saying that they expected China Unicom to benefit the most from the regrouping whereas the strength of China Mobile could be reduced.     Others, however, said they expected China Mobile to remain the giant among the giants and retain most of its power in the mainland telecom industry.     Chang, head of China Unicom, also warned against "over optimism" about the increased strength of the merged company, saying it required long-term effort.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.

MIANYANG, Sichuan Province, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday visited with some earthquake survivors who had resettled in public camps in Sichuan Province's Mianyang City.     For refugees staying in low-lying lands in the southwest Chinese province, they were also at threat from the huge "quake lakes" bursting their banks.     The 8.0-magnitude tremor on May 12, which had claimed at least 69,134 lives to date, had created the threatening 200 million cubic meter Tangjiashan quake lake which overlooks Mianyang, about 70 meters above the city.     The local government is currently relocating more than 210,000 people to safer grounds.     In his third visit to the province since the quake, Wen said ina camp harboring hundreds of the quake homeless, "I hope you would understand our efforts to resettle you away from your home to a relatively safe place because the swelling quake lake is so dangerous."     "Yes, we understand," the locals replied. NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation and they should work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.     In a speech delivered at a luncheon co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and other friendly American organizations, Wen said China-U.S. relations have made significant progress since his first official visit to the United States in 2003.     High-level contacts between the two sides are more frequent than ever before, said Wen, who arrived here Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations.     "There are now over 60 dialogue and consultative mechanisms between our two countries. The Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Strategic Dialogue have in particular played an important part in increasing strategic mutual trust between the two sides."     On economic cooperation, Wen noted that China and the United States are now each other's second largest trading partners.     Dialogue and cooperation have also extended to a number of new areas, such as energy resources and climate change, he added.     In addition, China and the United States have maintained communication and coordination on global security issues such as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation and on regional and international hot-spot issues, the Chinese premier said.     The ever-deepening friendship between the two peoples is an integral part of growing relations between the two countries, Wen said.     He also expressed sincere appreciation to the American people from all walks of life for their abiding commitment to China-U.S. friendship and extended heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. government and people for their strong support for China's earthquake relief and efforts in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.     As to the China-U.S. relations after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Wen said China hopes to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative relations with the United States whoever becomes the next U.S. president. This serves the interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and is conducive to China-U.S. relations and peace in the world."     Wen also took questions after delivering the speech. When asked about China's food safety, he said that the Chinese government has paid great attention to the country's recent infant formula milk power contamination incident and adopted a series of resolute measures to deal with it.     China will take vigorous measures to ensure the quality of products and food safety, Wen said, adding that China's exports will meet both international standards and requirements of importers and China is willing to enhance cooperation with the U.S. in this regard.     U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations Carla A. Hills also made speeches during the luncheon.     They shared the view that enhancing China-U.S. cooperation is vital to the maintaining of world peace and stability and the resolution of many issues facing the world, and the U.S. should continue to maintain engagements and cooperation with China.     During his three-day stay in New York, Wen will attend a high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Thursday and the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly Wednesday.
