SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transgender San Diegan is calling for change when it comes to blood donation.Currently, the FDA’s recommendation to blood establishments is that in the context of the donor history questionnaire, male or female gender should be self-identified and self-reported for blood donation.Van Levy of Pacific Beach is non-binary transgender, meaning Van does not identify as male or female. Van goes by gender-neutral pronouns like 'they', 'them', 'their', or just Van.Van tells 10News when they reached out to the San Diego Blood Bank, they were told they would not be able to donate if they could not fully complete the donor history questionnaire, which has two gender-specific questions. Van was told if they cannot fill out 'male' or 'female' on the questionnaire they would not be able to donate blood. “It was really hurtful and painful, it reminded me we haven’t progressed as much as a lot of us like to believe we have, it just hurt," said Van. The two gender-specific questions are, in the past 12 months, have you:Male Donors: Had sexual contact with another male?Female donors: Had sexual contact with a male who had sexual contact with another male in the past 12 months?Helen Bixenman is Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at the San Diego Blood Bank. She's in charge of making sure blood from the San Diego Blood Bank is safe and pure, free from transfusion-transmitted infections. “It’s important for people to understand we have a wide range of questions, and these questions pertain to the safety of the donor as well as the safety of the blood products. They include medications, how you’re feeling, travel, risk behaviors," said Bixenman.She says they must adhere to the strict regulations and requirements of the FDA and AABB. She says if anyone fails to fill out the entire donor history questionnaire they will be turned away from donating blood.Van wants to see this regulation changed and believes it marginalizes a group of people who only want to help their community. “I definitely understand the rules and regulations that they have to adhere too and I think that there's ways to remove gender from the questions to get to same answers they’re seeking to protect people receiving blood," said Van. Bixenman says the San Diego Blood Bank does not want to turn people away from blood donation. She says this is the first time they've encountered the situation and that she would consider bringing the issue up to advocacy groups and the FDA. 2505

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Superior Court judge gave San Diego County restaurants the green light to serve on-site again, but not all will make use of the opportunity.For Roddy Browning, the pressure to reopen his restaurant is intense.“We lay in bed at 2:30 in the morning, going, 'Okay, what am I going to do? What am I going to do tomorrow? What am I going to do the next day?'” said Browning, who owns Oceanside's Flying Pig Pub and Kitchen.Browning said sales are down 60% and employees have been reduced from 30 to 12. Reopening for outdoor dining under the new court ruling could boost those numbers.“The state's going to appeal it, and what is the point in opening back up again, and then bringing all these people back to work and saying okay guys the ruling changed, now we're going to have to kick you out of the restaurant again,” Browning said. “I don’t want to do that to my employees anymore.”Don't get him wrong. Browning does plan to reopen under the new court order - but he wants to respect the full three weeks intended in this latest shutdown order, set to complete on Dec. 28."This is not about us against them," Browning said. "We said we would give the governor his three weeks, and I'm going to give him his three weeks."But other San Diego restaurants are planning to remain takeout only until health officials advise otherwise.At Spring Valley's Cali-Comfort Barbecue, a gathering place for sports fans, owner Shawn Walchef says he's not offering indoor or outdoor dining.“We believe that the coronavirus is the antithesis of hospitality. Everything we do in our blood is to take care of people,” Walchef said. “Social distancing doesn’t work in our business. We welcome people into our homes.”Walchef cut about half of his staff - a day he calls his toughest as a restaurant owner.But he says Cali Comfort has fully embraced multiple digital ordering systems, helping it to remain profitable amid the pandemic.Still, the recent order impacts many. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego mother is responding to a disturbing video showing a woman screaming racial slurs and threats at her son, a black man, outside a downtown luxury apartment building early Tuesday morning.Shawni Crawley told 10News the incident occurred while her 29-year-old son, Rodney Jackson, was working as a security guard at the Pinnacle on The Park apartments located at 424 15th St. in San Diego's East Village neighborhood.The video, posted by Jackson's brother, doesn't clearly reveal the woman's identity. In his public Facebook post, his brother wrote: "A snippet of an incident with my brother and a racist white woman downtown San Diego!!! SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested late Wednesday night after a crash off Interstate 805 that left her car engulfed in flames.The incident occurred at around 11 p.m. in an area off southbound I-805, near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.ABC 10News learned the woman was involved in a two-vehicle wreck that then caused her Nissan 350Z to burst into flames.The driver was able to get out of the vehicle without major injuries; the driver of the other car was not injured.It took responding fire crews over 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.The Nissan’s driver was treated at the scene before she was arrested on unspecified charges. 639
