Michigan State Police say they have a trooper who has been hit by cars 11 separate times while on the job.That trooper, who works out of the Oak Park station, has been with the department for 25 years and is still patrolling today knowing every traffic stop is putting his life on the line."He's been hit in his patrol car and also struck standing on the side of the road,” said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw.Shaw admits that it might be a record, but said he doesn't know any officer who hasn't been hit by a another car while on the job.“I’ve been hit, the troopers standing behind me have all been hit. It’s not ‘if’ it’s a ‘when’.”He said traffic crashes are the number one cause of death for law enforcement patrol officers.Today first responders from across south east Michigan met to highlight the state's Move Over Law."It's a very simple law to go by," he said. "If you can move over, move over. If you can't then slow down and get by, keep your eyes on the road, don’t stare and gawk and see.”It's a campaign that includes all first responders, police, fire fighters, ambulances and any tow truck drivers assisting someone on the side of the road.Just last week a Michigan State Trooper's car was hit, as it was parked on the side of I-96 near Fullerton. The trooper was out of the car investigating another crash.Police officers and fire fighters pulled over to help a crash only to be hit themselves.Many become injured, some even die.Michigan State Police say five troopers have died from 1941 to 2000 after being hit by a driver that did not move over."We just want to remind people that there are actually families involved. MAUI, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities say the man killed by a shark in Hawaii this weekend was a 65-year-old resident of California.Shark warning signs are posted Sunday in the Ka'anapali Beach Park area on Maui where the man died.Witness Allison Keller tells Hawaii News Now that the man appeared unconscious as rescuers brought him to shore Saturday.Keller says the victim was missing his left leg from the knee down and skin was torn from his wrist.Hawaii's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement confirmed the man's age but did not release his name. Officials didn't say where in California he was from.The man's family told rescuers he had gone swimming in the area.The last fatal shark attack in Hawaii was in 2015, when a snorkeler off Maui was killed. 773

Mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc will be held without bond after making his first appearance Tuesday in a federal court in New York.The defense issued no objection to US Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger's decision. Sayoc's preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for Monday, but as courts are closed on Veteran's Day, his hearing has been rescheduled for Tuesday morning.In a letter, prosecutors had said they were asking that Sayoc be held without bond, based on his flight risk and the danger they said he posed to the community.Sayoc, who spent Monday night at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan after a charter transport flight from Florida, entered the courtroom wearing a navy blue prison uniform with a beige T-shirt underneath. He did not wear handcuffs or shackles.He conferred with public defender Sarah Jane Baumgartel, who sat next to him, and answered the judge's questions. Lehrburger officially appointed Baumgartel as his counsel.After the appearance, Sayoc and Baumgartel embraced before law enforcement officers led Sayoc out of the courtroom.The 56-year-old faces five federal charges: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers.Sayoc is accused of sending at least 16 mail bombs to several targets, including CNN, former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. None of the devices detonated, and no one was injured. Massachusetts is the first state since the deadly shooting in Las Vegas last month to ban bump stocks, the gun accessory the shooter used to increase his rate of fire.Bump stocks became a major source of discussion among lawmakers across the country after the attachments were found on the guns of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, who killed 58 and injured some 500 last month. But talk of banning the devices nationwide appears to have stalled.Beginning in 2018, penalties for the possession or use of a bump stock or trigger crank in Massachusetts will range from probation to life in prison, Representative David Linsky, a Democrat who proposed the amendment, told CNN.The new law defines a bump stock as "any device for a weapon that increases the rate of fire achievable with such weapon by using energy from the recoil of the weapon to generate a reciprocating action that facilitates repeated activation of the trigger."In other words, the devices allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more rapidly, similar to automatic weapons.
