BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua)-- Personal computer giant Dell Inc. said Thursday that it will raise parts purchases from China by 27.8 percent this year, increasing its presence in the booming market.     Dell is to buy 23 billion U.S. dollars worth of computer components and other equipment from Chinese suppliers this year, compared with 18 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, said Michael Dell, chief executive officer of the PC giant, at a press conference.     However, Dell's Beijing representative office denied reports that the company was planning to buy 29 billion U.S. dollars of computer parts from China in 2009.     To secure a bigger share of the Chinese market, Dell broke with its Internet sales model and sealed a deal in September to sell PCs through the country's top electronics retailer, GOME Electrical Appliances.     Dell saw its PC shipments in China up 54 percent year-on-year in 2007.     The company plans to expand its retail outlets from 45 cities in 2007 to 1,200 by the end of the year.     China, where Dell ranks third in terms of market share, is one of the company's fastest growing markets, said Michael Dell.     Dell has two factories in Xiamen, a coastal city in southeastern Fujian Province, a design center in Shanghai and a customer contact center in Dalian, a northeast coastal city, with more than 6,000 employees in China.     Meanwhile, Dell estimates it will contribute more than 50 billion U.S. dollars to China's gross domestic product (GDP) this year, and provide about 2 million jobs.     Dell also said it would donate 1.7 million yuan (239,436 U.S. dollars) to build six education centers in China to teach computer skills to migrant workers' children.

NANJING - The legislature of the eastern province of  Jiangsu has amended the law to clearly define sexual harassment and allow complainants to sue.The Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress on Thursday passed the revised Jiangsu Provincial Measures for Implementing China's Law on Protection of Women's Rights, saying "sexual harassment of women in the form of spoken and written language, images, electronic information and bodily gestures is prohibited." The measures allow those who claim that they have been harassed to report such cases to employers, authorities and the police, which must prevent or stop such behavior. Women can also sue those they contend harassed them.Although sexual harassment was included in an amendment of the national law in 2005, the legislation didn't clearly define harassment, which made it difficult to prove in court, said Wang Lasheng, vice chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress."A clear definition of the forms of sexual harassment will definitely help law enforcement and improve victims' awareness of self-protection," said Wang.Defining sexual harassment at the local level was a welcome attempt to supplement the national law, said Wang, adding that similar statutes have been passed in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Anhui provinces and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. These laws allow complainants to file claims or sue.

BEIJING -- Timothy Keating, US Pacific Command commander-in-chief, will visit China from January 13 to 16, the Chinese Ministry of National Defence (MND) said on Tuesday.During Keating's China stay, senior Chinese generals and officials from the Central Military Commission, the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), Guangzhou Military Area Command and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will meet him separately, the foreign affairs office of the MND said in a press release.The Chinese officials were expected to widely exchange views with Keating on Sino-US military ties, the Taiwan issue, and international and regional affairs of common concern, according to the press release.The four-day tour would also take Keating to the country's financial hub of Shanghai, and Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday the election of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
