BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes to deepen economic and trade cooperation with Kyrgyzstan for mutual benefit, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said here on Wednesday.     Wang made the remarks at his meeting with visiting first deputy prime minister of Kyrgyzstan Omurbek Babanov. Babanov paid his visit to China to attend the 8th meeting of the China-Kyrgyzstan joint commission on economic and trade cooperation.     Expressing his congratulations on the successful conclusion of the meeting, Wang said the two countries enjoyed deepening mutual political trust and sound development of economic and trade cooperation in recent years.     Wang also expressed China's hope for the two sides to strengthen feasibility study of important cooperative projects.     Babanov said Kyrgyzstan was ready to boost bilateral cooperation in all fields, in efforts to push forward bilateral relations.     Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO), a regional organization which also comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.     Chinese President Hu Jintao will attend the ninth SCO annual summit on his state visit to Russia from June 14 to 18. Leaders are expected to discuss measures on tackling the economic downturn as well as expanding economic cooperation.

SHANGHAI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Kaohsiung mayor Chen Chu met with her Shanghai counterpart Han Zheng Saturday afternoon during her visit to the mainland.     Chen was to promote the World Games, to be held in Taiwan's port city Kaohsiung from July 16 to 26. Shanghai is the last leg of her promotion tour.     Han expressed his confidence in deepening cooperation between the two port cities.     "With development of cross-straits ties, exchanges between Shanghai and Kaohsiung are more frequent than before," he said. She flew to Shanghai Saturday afternoon.

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms since early the week have swept a wide swathe of south China, leaving dozens people dead or missing and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.     In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated following the heaviest rain this summer, local flood control authorities said. The rain damaged 178,000 hectares of crops, caused 8,231 houses to collapse, and incurred a direct economic loss of 1.31 billion yuan (191.7 million U.S. dollars). The province, for the first time in history, issued the highest level of rainstorm alarm on Friday.     Many reservoirs were swollen because of the rain, among which six were discharging water, while levels in the rest were under the alarm line.     In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, four were missing and 11,845 were evacuated. The torrential rain also damaged 12,440 hectares of crops and killed 53,300 head of cattle. Temperature in parts of the city exceeded 37 Celsius degrees Friday.
