SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is pleading for their father back after they say officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended him on June 20. Their father is expected in court on July 18. Gilberto Mayorga's children say it's hard to imagine life separated from him. "He's been here's since he was 17, 16. All he knows is San Diego. All he knows being here," his daughter, Eugenia Mayorga said. They say their father met their mother and started their family. He was deported but quickly came back so he could help their mother, who was struggling to support their family. "As soon as he came back, I remember having a roof over our heads," his daughter Bridgette Rembao, said. "I feel like the only crime he made was to come back and financially support us." ICE painted a different picture of Mayorga. ICE officials say he had previously been removed from the country five times. He served 100 days in federal prison for illegally entering the country. They say he has two felony criminal convictions for drug offenses and was sentenced to more than than five months in jail. He was also convicted of two other misdemeanors. ICE officials released the following statement to 10News:“While no class of alien present in the country illegally is exempt from ICE enforcement efforts, ICE officers do prioritize individuals they seek to apprehend and remove including criminal aliens, especially those who have repeatedly ignored our nation’s immigration laws.” 1500

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A group of parents rallied in Mira Mesa Thursday morning to urge the San Diego Unified School District to reopen schools for in-person learning sooner rather than later.Since March, the district has kept school doors shut, but officials recently announced plans to initiate Phase 2 of a return plan come January. At Thursday’s rally, parents said that's not soon enough."Kids are depressed. We're trying to get them outside safe, but they need socialization and to be with friends. That's half of what they get out of school,” a parent said.City Councilmember Chris Cate joined parents Thursday in support, adding, "Every day that passes is critical."Cate said San Diego's climate could have easily played a part in welcome all students back to class by now."Outdoor learning, why are we not taking advantage of the climate we have here in San Diego? Yes, it's innovative and costly but ideas could be put forward when we know in fact, and have data that says, 'This is working' or 'this isn't working.’”Even though the trend of rallies has made a difference for districts in Poway, Carlsbad, Del Mar and Vista, it came with a cost. One week after Vista Unified welcomed students back into classrooms, five COVID-19 cases arose in their district, resulting in a lack of teachers to fill in and a quick move by the board to set new rules. Some parents in Vista even thought twice about their decision to send kids back to class, including parent Timothy Hernandez."I think they need to re-evaluate their plan and I wouldn't bring them back until next summer. I know they had trouble with subs and that says a lot,” Hernandez said.Yet parents like SUHSD dad Edward Ewing had opposing views."It seems like they're not putting the kids first, the psychological effect on kids are going to be felt for generations,” Ewing said.Carlsbad is the latest district to announce an in-person learning hybrid program that includes some students returning as soon as Nov. 30. 1984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A baby southern white rhino born this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has monumental implications moving forward. Not only is the rhino calf the zoo's first successful rhino birth via artificial insemination, it's the first successful in North America for the rhino species. The calf, named Edward, was born Sunday at the zoo's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. Edward's birth now represents the potential to bring back the rhino's relative, the northern white rhino, from the brink of extinction.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to be featured in new reality television series on Animal Planet"Not only are we thankful for a healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction," Barbara Durrant, Henshaw endowed director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global, said.Researchers hope the science behind the calf's birth can lead to a successful recovery of the genetic recovery of the northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet. Both are females.Ultimately, researchers believe southern white rhinos could serve as surrogates for northern white rhino embryos. The process has already been successfully applied to other rhino species, according to the zoo. Through in vitro fertilization, researchers say a northern white rhino could be born within 10 to 20 years.RELATED: New research suggests threats continue for California condorsRight now, the San Diego Zoo is focusing on making sure the new calf and its mom, Victoria, continue doing well. Durrant says Victoria is very attentive and the calf is walking around and nursing frequently.Victoria was artificially inseminated on March 22, 2018, after hormone-induced ovulation. White rhino gestation is estimated to take 485 days. She carried the calf for 493 days. The calf is the zoo's 99th southern white rhino born at the Safari Park. The park has also seen successful births of 73 greater one-horned rhinos and 14 black rhinos.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitVictoria's newborn, however, brings a new hope to the zoo's program. The mom and calf will remain off exhibit from the public to allow them to bond, the zoo says. Eventually, the calf will be introduced to the other five female rhinos at the rescue center. One of them, Amani, is also pregnant through artificial insemination and due in September or October. 2464

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The White House formally withdrew its nomination Wednesday of San Diego businessman Doug Manchester to be the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.Manchester, nicknamed "Papa Doug," withdrew himself for consideration for the ambassadorship last month "due to the threats on his and his family's lives including three infant children under 4 years old," according to a statement Manchester Financial Group gave to the Nassau Guardian.President Donald Trump first nominated Manchester in 2017 and re- nominated him in 2018 and 2019 after his nomination languished in the U.S. Senate. In September, Manchester launched a private disaster relief effort in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian's damage to the archipelago.RELATED:San Diego businessman Doug Manchester flies aid to the BahamasPresident Trump to nominate 'Papa' Doug Manchester as ambassador to BahamasGroundbreaking held for waterfront's Manchester Gateway Pacific projectManchester built multiple hotels in San Diego, including the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina and the Manchester Grand Hyatt, and served as the publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune from 2011 to 2015 before selling the newspaper to the Tribune Publishing Co.Manchester and his wife both donated nearly 0,000 to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. 1312
