The resolution condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism and other forms of hatred as antithetical to ``American values of dignity and respect for all people.'' It also expresses hope that the three injured survivors of the attack make a full and swift recovery and includes a call to honor the memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who died at the scene of the shooting that occurred during a celebration of the end of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover. ``The rising threat of white nationalism and white supremacy is in direct contradiction with the highest ideals of our country, and I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this resolution to condemn this despicable hate,'' Harris said. ``Hate has no place in our country,'' Feinstein said. ``Our resolution condemns the anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Chabad and reaffirms our nation's values of openness and tolerance so all Americans can worship freely without fear of violence.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An attempted murder charge was filed Wednesday against a woman who slit the throat of another woman at a Mira Mesa Walgreens store last weekend, in what has been described as a random attack on a complete stranger.Kelly Ann Green, 55, is accused in Saturday morning's attack on an unidentified 59-year-old woman, who suffered a five-inch laceration across her neck.Green faces 10 years in state prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge and a weapon-use allegation, according to Deputy San Diego County District Attorney Mary Naoom.The prosecutor said the victim was filling her prescription at the Walgreens at 10787 Camino Ruiz when Green approached her, grabbed her by the hair and cut her throat.RELATED: Mira Mesa family forced from home after multiple attacksOther store patrons and employees subdued Green following the attack, which was captured on ``gruesome and very disturbing'' surveillance footage, Naoom said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who provided alcohol to an underage drinker who subsequently caused a crash that killed her passenger was sentenced to 240 days in custody, the City Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. Fraidoon Ahmad gave alcohol to Yolanda Lozano and Mabel Bahena, both 19, on Feb. 17, 2017. Lozano later drove while drunk and collided with a truck on Interstate 15, killing Bahena. Lozano pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and was sentenced to one year in custody, with Bahena's family asking a judge for leniency as the two women had been best friends since grade school. Ahmad pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor charges of furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 and furnishing alcohol to a minor causing great bodily injury and death. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. The prosecutor said Alvarez then threw Wagley to the ground and stabbed him several more times.Modlin said that following his release from prison, Alvarez failed to report to Post Release Community Supervision and committed the murder 16 days later.It was uncertain what crime Alvarez was serving time for, though the criminal complaint alleges he has prior San Diego County convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.In addition to murder, Alvarez faces allegations of using a knife in the slaying.He was being held without bail, but a bail review hearing was set for Friday. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' Stephan raised similar concerns near the beginning of the pandemic regarding potential increases in domestic and sexual abuse, with abuse victims being trapped indoors with their abusers as a result of self-quarantining at home.In addition to safety risks, Stephan argued distance learning is not viable for many county residents.
