An American couple visiting the Dominican Republic was found dead in their hotel room after they missed their scheduled check out, a police spokesman said.Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, missed their scheduled check out time at the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana.Hotel staff members went into their room and found the couple unresponsive Thursday, said spokesman Frank Felix Duran Mejia of the Dominican Republic National Police. There were no signs of violence in the room.Relatives told CNN affiliate WBAL that Holmes and Day were engaged. They were from Prince George's County, Maryland, and were supposed to fly back home the day they were found, the station reported.Hotel staff contacted local authorities. The cause of their death is not yet known, but their bodies have been transported to the Dominican National Institute of Forensic Sciences for an exam. A nurse who tested positive for COVID-19 says she’s getting better each day and expects to fully recover.Lisa Merck is not sure where she became infected with the virus but says symptoms started out very mild late last month."I started having just a little sniffling in my nose. It's almost like if you go outside and it's cold out and your nose just starts running a bit," Merck said in a video interview from her house.After a few days, in late February, the mild symptoms became worse.“Every time I stood up, I felt like I just kind of wanted to pass out. I got really tired,” she said.What surprised her is that after a few more days she started to feel better. She felt well enough to volunteer her time with a ski race in her small, central Colorado town. At one point, she went for a run with her husband.Doctors tested her for influenza and the results came back negative. Her health continued to improve, she said."I was feeling okay,” she said. “I watched my little nephew, and then around March 1st and 2nd, I started getting a fever. I started getting a little short of breath."This time, those symptoms persisted, and she eventually asked her husband to take her to the emergency room the second week of March. She tested positive for COVID-19. Merck provided a copy of her county health department notification, which requested she not have contact with members of the public while she recovers."I don't know where I got that kind of virus. That's the hard thing is not knowing I could have picked it up from a patient and I could have picked it up from a surface,” she said. “It could have been at an airport, on a place or a bus. I have no idea where I got it and that's the scary thing. And you know, especially since I am hyper vigilant about it, making sure my hands are clean and that I do the right thing.”Merck said she agreed to talk publicly, because she wants others to know what to watch for. She says she also wants the public to know that most people will beat the virus. "I'm feeling a lot better. I'm feeling more energetic. I did a little yoga this morning. A White House staff member has told House investigators that senior officials have overruled concerns raised about 25 individuals whose security clearances were initially denied over a range of disqualifying issues -- such as fears about foreign influence and potential conflicts-of-interests -- warning of the grave implications to national security, according to a senior Democratic lawmaker.Now House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings plans to issue a subpoena this week demanding an interview with Carl Kline, who served as the personnel security director at the White House during President Donald Trump's first two years in office -- as part of the Democrats' investigation into the handling of the security clearance process, including for Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and the President's daughter, Ivanka Trump, who are both also White House advisers.Cummings released a memo Monday detailing an interview with Tricia Newbold, a White House employee who has worked for 18 years in Republican and Democratic administrations and currently serves as the Adjudications Manager in the Personnel Security Office. According to the memo, Newbold, whom Cummings described as a whistleblower, alleges that the White House has overturned the denials of 25 individuals, including two current senior White House officials, saying those decisions were occurring "without proper analysis, documentation, or a full understanding and acceptance of the risks.""According to Ms. Newbold, these individuals had a wide range of serious disqualifying issues involving foreign influence, conflicts of interest, concerning personal conduct, financial problems, drug use, and criminal conduct," Democratic committee staff write in the memo.During a full day of questioning before Democratic and Republican staff on the committee, Newbold aired out an array of concerns about the security clearance process, saying that the White House had stopped doing credit history checks during the review process, lacked security for personnel files and adequate staff during the review process, and allowed for an "unusually high" number of interim security clearances, including for some individuals "who were later deemed unsuitable for access to classified information," according to the memo. And Newbold contended White House officials retaliated against her because she would not easily greenlight security clearances."I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security," Newbold told the committee, according to the memo.The White House did not immediately respond a request for comment, nor did Newbold.Under the law, the President does have final say when it comes to allowing employees access to classified materials, something that Newbold acknowledged to House investigators, according to the memo.But Cummings has raised concerns that the White House has ignored basic standards for providing security clearances, instead allowing his inner circle access to the country's innermost secrets without regard to the concerns raised by career professionals. 3157
