WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump met Monday with his Homeland Security secretary and other officials to discuss border security issues as a partial government shutdown over his U.S.-Mexico border wall entered Christmas without a clear resolution in sight.Though both sides have traded offers over the dollars, they remain far apart on the wall. The White House insisted Trump will reject any deal that does not include money for a wall or fence; Democrats held firm in their opposition to a wall or other physical barrier.In a joint statement Monday, the Democratic leaders of Congress, Sen. Desperately needed!"However, an AP Fact Check found that U.S. arrests on the Mexican border jumped 78 percent in November from a year earlier to the highest level in Trump's presidency. Increased arrests indicate that more people are trying to cross the border illegally.Several Cabinet departments and agencies have been closed since Saturday after their funding lapsed. The closure affects hundreds of thousands of federal workers across the country and was expected to last at least through Thursday, when the House and Senate meet again.Monday and Tuesday, Christmas Eve and Christmas, respectively, are federal holidays, meaning the government is closed anyway. That means Wednesday is the first day the public could begin to feel the effects of lost government services, Mulvaney said.The routines of about 800,000 federal employees, meanwhile, were about to be disrupted.More than half of those employees deemed essential, including U.S. Secret Service agents and Transportation Security Administration agents, must work without pay, though retroactive pay is expected. Another 380,000 were to be furloughed, meaning they will not report to work but would also be paid later. The email asks you to verify your billing information by clicking on the link. It even gives you a separate link to visit the help center. There’s also a fake email being sent out that’s claiming it’s from Apple. Recent research suggests one in four emails is trying to get your Apple ID, making it the top target of hackers.If you receive one of these emails, here’s what you should do. Never click on the link. That’s what scammers use to steal your information. Instead, if you’re really concerned, go to the company's website on your own and check things out. You can also try hovering your cursor over a link to see where it directs you, but there’s now new software that doesn’t always show you that.Finally, look at the email sender’s address. Who sent it? Are there inconsistencies? Sometimes it looks like it’s from a family member, friend or company you know, but the address doesn’t match up.Remember, just because they’re phishing doesn’t mean we have to take the bait. Something else to keep in mind is your bank will never send a generic email requesting personal information be sent back to it. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — An 11-year-old boy died of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, the youngest confirmed fatality from COVID-19 in the state, according to local government officials.Previously the youngest victim from COVID-19 was a 16-year-old girl from Lee County.The boy's death came the same day that Florida hit a grim record in connection with the pandemic, as the state announced 10,109 new cases, on Thursday. The new cases on Thursday put the state total at 169,106.There were more than 52,000 new cases of the coronavirus recorded across the country on Thursday. About 25,000 of those cases occurred in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.Dr. David Dodson of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, fears that numbers will only increase.Dodson described the increase in positive COVID-19 cases as exponential and added that 17 percent of all the hospitalizations in Florida right now are people under the age of 45.Dodson said the best preventative measures people can do is wear masks, avoid large crowds and stay at home when possible."Even though it's beautiful outside, and the sun is shining, we're in a hot zone. We're in a pandemic. This is a lethal pandemic, and how this goes depends on each of our behavior," Dodson said. "If you really clamp down and make everyone stay home, the virus really can't be transmitted, so then the cases go down after a couple of weeks.
