It’s all hands on deck during harvest time at Infinite Harvest.This indoor, hydroponic farm in Colorado specializes in microgreens, young vegetables grown in a controlled environment and cropped shortly after they’ve sprouted.Production manager Luke Blough says microgreen sales have quadrupled in the past nine months with more consumers becoming more health, sustainability and environmentally conscious.“We kind of check all three of those boxes,” he said. “Our microgreen products are very nutrient dense; very flavorful. They’re sustainably grown locally and we have less environmental impact.”There's less environmental impact because of the way they’re grown. Stacking shelves of microgreens and growing them under LED lights means using about 95% less land than traditional farming.This method is catching on nationally.“Consumers are becoming more interested in microgreens,” said Sarah A. Johnson, Ph.D., with the food science and human nutrition department at Colorado State University. “They’re a relatively new agricultural food crop.”.In addition to the nutritional and environmental benefits, Johnson’s team found that microgreens could have major impacts in urban areas by making fresh produce more easily available to areas considered food deserts.“I think they have a lot of potential to kind of pop up all over the place,” she said. “Not just with these large companies but with smaller sort of pop-up, start-up companies as well.”As more farmers look to avoid unpredictable weather and leave less of a carbon footprint, experts predict microgreen consumption will continue growing nationwide“There are a couple of things we can do in a controlled environment that you can’t really do when you’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” Blough said. 1768

In the wake of recent fatal pedestrian crashes, a law firm commissioned a study that reveals the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in San Diego.In 2016, there were 103 pedestrian fatalities in San Diego County. Investigators are trying to determine whether an explosion early Tuesday at a FedEx facility outside San Antonio is connected to four explosions that have rattled the Austin, Texas, area this month.The most recent blast happened inside a FedEx facility in Schertz, Texas, FBI San Antonio spokeswoman Michelle Lee said. Schertz is a San Antonio suburb that is roughly an hour's drive southwest of Austin.One FedEx team member suffered minor injuries when a "single package exploded" at the ground sorting facility, company spokesman Jim McCluskey said Tuesday in a statement. An ATF spokeswoman earlier had said no injuries were reported."We are not providing any additional specific information about this package at this time," McCluskey said.Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, Lee said there could be a connection with the four Austin explosions, which killed two people and injured four others over 17 days starting March 2. 956

INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Roncalli High School students say the controversy brewing after a guidance counselor says she was asked to resign over her same-sex marriage sheds light on a culture of intolerance at the Indianapolis school that has been going on for years. In 2012 after two students took their own lives, classmates say they formed an after-school group called "Rebels 4 Acceptance." Some of them were dealing with bullying issues, some with mental health issues and others issues involving their LGBT status. "It definitely would not have been safe for one of my classmates to come out, not entirely anyway," said Andria McHugh, class of 2013. "They may have been fearful if they did. Just of judgment."The group's founding members say it was meant to be a safe place for all students to find acceptance. The group met every few weeks to talk about what they were going through and how they could make school more inclusive for everybody. But after less than a year, the group says their club was shut down by school administrators. "They had seen it as encouraging homosexual behavior,' said Kendall Wood, class of 2014. Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald has been placed on administrative leave after she says someone sought out her marriage certificate showing she was married to another woman and gave it to the school. In a statement released Monday, Roncalli has said the expectations and teachings of the Catholic Church are clearly defined in employee contracts and job descriptions. Fitzgerald says she has been overwhelmed by the support she's seeing from the community and her students."I mean, it's a great message for my daughter more importantly than anything," said Fitzgerald. "It's a great message for our students and our community at Roncalli because it's what we've taught them all along. Be kind to each other, take care of each other, be welcoming to each other and do it with Jesus in your heart."WRTV has reached out to Roncalli High School administrators and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for comment about the students' claims and about Fitzgerald's status with the school.
