XIAMEN, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The three-decade achievements of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone have shown that China has made the right decision to set up special economic zones (SEZs), President Hu Jintao said Monday.Hu made the remarks in a congratulatory letter to a gala held Monday in southeastern Fujian province's city of Xiamen, which is celebrating the 30th founding anniversary of its special economic zone.Over the past 30 years, the Xiamen Special Economic Zone has made marked socio-economic progress, made significant changes in people's lives, and served as a pilot area for the country's reform and opening-up and socialist modernization, Hu said. The Xiamen Special Economic Zone has made a unique contribution to promoting cross-Strait economic and trade cooperation as well as culture and personnel exchanges, Hu said in the letter.Hu also urged the economic zone to further enhance the capability of independent innovation, ensure and improve people's well being, strengthen and make innovations in social management, and better serve the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relationship. He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, attended and addressed the gala.In his speech, He said the economic zone should develop high-end manufacturing business and a modern service industry, while speeding up the establishment of a market-oriented technology innovation system that integrates production with scientific research. The economic zone needs to make greater efforts in energy saving and emissions reduction as well as environmental protection by greatly developing a green and recycling-based economy, according to He.He also said that the economic zone should exert itself to increase the income of rural and urban residents, especially low-income residents, and meet people's basic requirements in terms of education and culture, employment, medical services and housing."Reasonable appeals of the people should be addressed, and behavior that undermines people's interests should be resolutely rectified," He said.In addition, He expects the Xiamen Special Economic Zone to thoroughly implement the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) and further explore and enhance cooperation in finance and logistics with Taiwan, He said. The economic zone should also strengthen the development of direct flights, customs clearance and ports in order to facilitate direct exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, according to He.He also met with representatives of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents and overseas Chinese, who attended the gala.He said people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have long been active in investing, financing education and alleviating poverty in Fujian. They have not only shared the opportunities that the country's reform and development have brought forth and expanded their own enterprises, but also greatly boosted the country's socio-economic progress, He said."You are witnesses, participants and beneficiaries of the reform and opening up," He said to these representatives. The Xiamen Special Economic Zone is one of the four earliest SEZs set up after China initiated the reform and opening up in 1978. In 1984, it was expanded from the initial 2.5 square kilometers to 131 square kilometers. Last year, it was extended to span the entire city.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Vitamin D levels are significantly lower in patients with recurrent inflammatory spinal cord disease, according to a study published online Monday in Archives of Neurology.Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin that promotes the intestinal absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. In recent years, low levels of vitamin D have been linked to a variety of autoimmune conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the importance of vitamin D in monophasic or recurrent non-MS spinal cord diseases including transverse myelitis and neuromyelitis optica is unknown, according to background information in the article.Transverse myelitis (TM) is a disease of the spinal cord in which there is involvement of the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibers; symptoms include back pain and weakness in the legs. Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a disease of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerves and spinal cord.Maureen Mealy, of Johns Hopkins University and colleagues investigated the association between low serum vitamin D levels and recurrent spinal cord disease. They analyzed data on vitamin D levels among 77 patients with monophasic (having only one phase or stage) and recurrent inflammatory diseases of the spinal cord, adjusting for season, age, sex, and race. The study found that vitamin D levels were significantly lower in patients who developed recurrent spinal cord disease."Our findings suggest that there may be an association between lower total 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in patients with recurrent TM/NMO/ spectrum disorders as compared with their counterparts with monophasic disease," the authors report. They suggest that future studies are needed to further assess the relationship between vitamin D and recurrent spinal cord disease.

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) - Orthopaedic experts have warned that China should improve its prevention of orthopaedic illnesses as its population ages.Osteoporosis, bone fractures and joint diseases, to which elderly people are particularly susceptible, have surged as serious health concerns, said Feng Huicheng, surgeon-in-chief of a leading Chinese orthopaedics hospital, at the Sixth International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) Sunday in Beijing.According to China's latest census in 2010, the number of people aged 60 and over stood at 177.65 million and accounted for more than 13 percent of the country's total 1.3 billion population."Orthopaedic diseases pose a great threat to the elderly, and they'll only grow more serious as we have a large population that is aging," said Dr. Feng from the No. 309 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army."The younger generation should start to be concerned with their health now, particularly calcium loss, to prevent osteoporosis when getting old.".A report issued by the International Osteoporosis Foundation this year shows that about 70 million people in China now suffer from the condition and that number may leap to 286 million by 2020.H.K.T.Raza, president of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, said at the conference that the prevention of osteoporosis should begin when people are still young."Osteoporosis is best prevented by regular exercises and good dietary controls. All that has to be done early in life, maybe between 20 and 30, to prevent the disease," he said.According to the World Health Organization, osteoporosis remains one of the primary threats to the health of the middle-aged and elderly.Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Parts of the bone grow weak and prone to fracture. Women are usually subject to greater risk of osteoporosis than men as they start with lower bone density and lose bone mass faster as they age.

Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice President Xi Jinping, Vice Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Wang Qishan will meet with him during the visit.Liu said China and the U.S. have agreed to build a partnership of cooperation based on mutual respect and mutual benefit."The global economic and financial situation is facing severe challenges. Further strengthening China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation will be helpful in meeting these challenges," Liu said."China has proposed further promoting the two countries' economic and trade cooperation and hopes the U.S. will work with China toward this end," Liu said.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's efforts to fight AIDS are impressive and its experience can be shared, according to Michel Sidibe, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)."We have seen progress in terms of new infections. The number of people going into treatment is increasing and the mortality rate is going down very quickly in China," Sidibe said during an interview with Xinhua on Wednesday.Sidibe said he was impressed by the country's political leadership and commitment to controlling AIDS.According to UNAIDS, the country has reported a 60-percent reduction in deaths due to AIDS over the past eight years.New HIV infection cases in China have been reduced from 70,000 people annually in 2005 to around 48,000 in 2011, according to the country's health department."However, China's success will not only be measured by what it has done for the Chinese people," Sidibe said.China has successful experience in reducing new HIV infections among intravenous drug users, which can be shared with the rest of the world, particularly east Europe and south Asia where HIV infections among drug abusers is a major challenge, he said.Sidibe suggested that the country should work with the rest of the developing world, particularly Africa, in fighting AIDS.A partnership between China and Africa will make a "big, big difference" in reducing AIDS mortality rates and introducing new technology and perspectives in Africa, said the official who had worked for UN in several African countries for more than two decades.Admitting the challenges of funding AIDS control programs during the current global economic downturn, Sidibe called for global solidarity and increasing shared responsibilities among countries."It is a critical moment now. It is not a time to stop investment but to redouble our efforts, to make sure that we will continue to make progress in the fight against HIV," Sidibe said."Getting to Zero" has been chosen as the main theme of World AIDS Day for the next five years, referring to UNAIDS' vision of "zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths."Sidibe met with Li Congjun, president of the Xinhua News Agency, on Wednesday before the interview. The agency has launched a global media campaign in cooperation with UNAIDS to raise public awareness about HIV/AIDS."The partnership (with Xinhua) is not only about writing news about HIV. It is about helping people to change their attitude and make decisions to help protect themselves," Sidibe said.
