ATHENS, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The third Forum on the Development of Tibet concluded here on Friday after discussions on efforts to promote the world's understanding of Tibet and enhance the cooperation between China and the rest of the world with regards to Tibet's development.This year marks the 60th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation. During the two-day event, delegates from Greece, Britain, France, Germany, India and Nepal expressed their opinions on Tibet's modernization and put forward valuable advice and suggestions based on their own experience and research findings.Some of the foreign delegates have visited Tibet many times before. Narasimhan Ram, Editor-in-chief of The Hindu from India and Brendan O'Neill, editor of the British magazine Spiked spoke positively about the preferential polices and financial support of the Chinese central government and other parts of China for the region.During the Forum, Wang Chen, head of the Chinese State Council Information Office met with the Greek political leaders and journalists from mainstream media.People got an opportunity to learn more about China as Nyima Tsering, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region, introduced the development of Tibet and the Chinese government's policy towards the region.A number of Greek mainstream media covered the Forum.Over the past 60 years, Tibet has achieved a huge development in both its social structure and socio-economic development, said a communique released upon the end of the forum.It also foresees a great potential of cooperation with the international community in energy, environment, education and healthcare development for the region.The forum has facilitated better understanding of Tibet in the international community and will help to promote faster and better development of the autonomous region, the Communique said.

MANILA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- No Chinese national has so far been found dead in the flashfloods triggered by tropical storm Washi ( local name Sendong), a Chinese embassy official said on Sunday.When asked on possible casualties of Chinese nationals, an offical with the Cebu Consulate said they just contacted with relevant persons in disaster affected areas, and there is no report on the casualties of Chinese citizens. The Consulate still tried its best to get further information from other sources.The Philippine Red Cross said Sunday that the death toll from the tropical storm Washi in the Philippines rose to 497, with 162 others still missing.

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Acclaimed orthopaedic surgeons and experts attending a major conference in Beijing have agreed to build up a platform for international cooperation aiming at jointly coping with medical and social challenges.At the Sixth International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) that concluded on Sunday, presidents of more than 80 national and international orthopaedic societies signed a declaration which seeks a model for both developing and developed countries to help reduce medical costs in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.With an aging global population, rapidly rising medical costs have become a heavy financial burden for governments worldwide. Medical insurance cost control has become a hot topic around the world.Bone and joint diseases, infections due to traffic accident traumas and other diseases causing high disability rates have affected millions of people worldwide."One of the objectives of the COA international conference is to provide a platform for medical experts around the world to discuss not only clinical techniques but also medical and social problems," said Professor Wang Yan, chairman of the COA.To fully leverage existing professional knowledge and resources, presidents of orthopaedic organizations attending the conference adopted and released the Beijing Declaration which calls for a platform to enhance global and national collaboration and partnerships among the professions, industries and related patient organizations and disciplines.The declaration also stresses maximizing Internet-based learning and encouraging international exchanges."Worldwide, I have one lament, that we've spent so much money on medical research, but very little on orthopaedics. WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A novel study in twins found that exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) -- a hazardous organic contaminant found in soil, groundwater, and air -- is significantly associated with increased risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). Possibility of developing this neurodegenerative disease is also linked to perchloroethylene (PERC) and carbon tetrachloride (CCI4) exposure, according to the study appearing in Annals of Neurology on Monday.The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates that as many as 500,000 Americans have PD and more than 50,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. While there is much debate regarding cause of PD, studies suggest that genetic and environmental factors likely trigger the disease. Several studies have reported that exposure to solvents may increase risk of PD, but research assessing specific agents is limited.The current epidemiological study, led by Samuel Goldman and Caroline Tanner with The Parkinson's Institute in Sunnyvale, California, investigated exposure to TCE, PERC and CCI4 and risk of developing PD. The team interviewed 99 twin pairs in which one twin had PD and one didn't, inquiring about lifetime occupations and hobbies. Lifetime exposures to six specific solvents previously linked to PD in medical literature -- n-hexane, xylene, toluene, CCI4, TCE and PERC -- were inferred for each job or hobby.The findings are the first to report a significant association between TCE exposure and PD -- a more than six-fold increased risk. Researchers also found that exposure to PERC and CCI4 tended toward significant risk of developing the disease. "Our study confirms that common environmental contaminants may increase the risk of developing PD, which has considerable public health implications," commented Goldman in a statement.TCE, PERC and CCI4 have been used extensively worldwide, with TCE noted as a common agent in dry-cleaning solutions, adhesives, paints, and carpet cleaners. Despite the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banning the use of TCE as a general anesthetic, skin disinfectant, and coffee decaffeinating agent in 1977, it is still widely used today as a degreasing agent. In the U.S., millions of pounds of TCE are still released into the environment each year and it is the most common organic contaminant found in ground water, detected in up to 30 percent of drinking water supplies in the country.In a release issued on Sept. 28, 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that TCE is carcinogenic to humans.
