SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We've all seen the nasal swabs being pushed far up noses to test for coronavirus. And if you've had it done, you know it's uncomfortable. But more tests are being developed where all you have to do is spit into a tube."You basically open up your mouth, we collect a tiny bit of saliva and you're done. Your side is done," said Dr. Henry Ji, President and CEO of San Diego based Sorrento Theraputics.According to Ji, the biopharma company is on track to start producing a rapid saliva test developed by researchers at Columbia University.It's being called "COVI TRACE" and it can be used almost anywhere.It gives results in about 30 minutes, with the liquid color changing from red to yellow if it's positive for Covid-19.Preliminary results indicate the test has high accuracy rates.Sorrento also says "COVI TRACE" is highly sensitive, meaning it can detect the presence of Covid-19 very early on.Sorrento executives say they plan to submit the test for FDA approval within the next few weeks."While the FDA is reviewing and leading up to review we are gearing up to manufacture hundreds of thousands and millions of tests; eventually anticipating about a hundred million tests a month," said Sorrento's Henry Brunswick.As for the cost, Ji says they're trying to keep it widely affordable, at around .At this point there's no estimate for when the rapid saliva "COVI TRACE" test could be approved by the FDA, but Sorrento is submitting an emergency use request in hopes of speeding up the process. 1528

"It's going to be missed, it's really going to be missed," said Sharon Maynard, a customer of 35 years.Maynard fell in love with the literary and poetry magazines. "Now they just go online, but for me, there's nothing better than having it in your hand in print," said Maynard.Also sad to see the newsstand go is manager Kent Snyder, who's worked at Paras for 33 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego nursing homes are now dealing with positive cases of COVID-19. La Vida Real, an assisted living center in Rancho San Diego, confirmed to 10News that four of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.The facility is one of 32 owned by the Senior Resource Group. It’s the second local assisted living center to be hit with COVID-19. This Wednesday, San Diego County officials confirmed to 10News a positive case at Stellar Care Center, just south of the College Area. Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes keeps growing: In Kirkland, Washington, an outbreak at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths. In Louisiana, eleven deaths have now been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, three patients at a nursing home have now died after testing positive.La Vida Real issued a statement to 10News, detailing how the company is handling the coronavirus cases:"La Vida Real has communicated with residents and their families, and is in close contact with San Diego County health officials, after learning that four staff members in our assisted living and memory care building tested positive for COVID-19. We are monitoring the situation closely and requiring all staff in the assisted living and memory care building to wear masks when inside the building and use personal protective equipment when interacting with residents showing any symptoms, per CDC guidelines. Out of an abundance of caution we are also working with the health department to test one additional employee and four residents in memory care.We will continue to follow CDC and public health department guidance and take the steps necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and staff. We are committed to continue the rigorous protective measures and precautionary actions we have implemented in this challenging environment. And while the effects of this virus are impacting everyone, we take protecting our residents and employees very seriously."Additionally, the organization says they continue to take extensive precautionary measures for residents and staff at the community, including:Visits are limited to essential visitors only. (Adults over the age of 18 who are medical providers, hospice care providers, or visitors of residents who are at the end of life.)All visitors and employees must complete an extensive screening process including travel and health questions as well as have their temperature read.Essential visits may only occur in resident rooms.All visitors and employees should practice precautionary measures such as use of sanitizers, hand washing and social distancing. Our onsite restaurant and communal dining rooms have been closed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit.
