ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – Police in Escondido have identified the suspect shot and killed by an officer at Valley View Casino Saturday night as Osbaldo Ramirez Jimenez, 50.The incident began after police received a domestic disturbance call on the 1400 block of Timber Glen Road in Escondido.When they arrived, police say the suspect got into a vehicle and led them on a chase that ended at the casino’s valet entrance.RELATED: Officer-involved shooting reported at Valley View Casino in North San Diego County?When Jimenez got out of the vehicle, police say they noticed he was holding a handgun when the officer-involved shooting took place. Jimenez was taken to the hospital where he later died. Authorities also identified the officer involved in the shooting as Officer Terrence Pizzuti, who they say has been with the department since 2013.The incident reportedly caused chaos inside the casino. One woman inside at the time of the shooting was trampled. She was taken to the hospital where she is expected to survive.The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation. Fat Bear Week is back, and voting is now open. The event is hosted by Katmai National Park and features a dozen brown bears preparing for hibernation.It’s an annual tournament comparing chubby bears and it’s getting renewed attention in 2020 as pandemic-weary Americans search for reasons to smile and look at adorable wildlife.Katmai National Park selects 12 bears preparing for the winter, some have names like “Holly,” who was 2019’s winner, “Grazer,” “Chunk,” “Otis,” and “Walker,” while others are identified by number. They then offer images of the bears from early this summer to images taken in the last few weeks to show how the animals are growing.Voting starts Wednesday and the head-to-head match-ups continue through October 6. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Cardiff Elementary School in Encinitas must pay 0,000 just so it can resume a project to modernize its campus.The payment is part of a settlement to a group that sued the district over a project to rebuild much of the school, which had upwards of 60-year-old buildings.In 2016, voters approved a million bond measure authorizing the project. The group that sued, Save the Park and Build the School, challenged the plan's environmental impact report and its plan to build a multipurpose facility on part of a grassy area of district property that doubles as a public park in off hours. Late last year, a judge ruled in the group's favor and issued an order to halt work on the project. This week, the school and the group reached a settlement to allow campus construction to resume, and put the multipurpose center back into a federal approval process because it involves the National Park Service. The group got 0,000 for legal fees. "It was a flex and it cost our kids and the taxpayers 0,000 to bring us right back to where we were in December," said Morgan Gates, a parent at the school. Eleanor Musick, who heads the group, said the park is cherished and one of the only open spaces nearby. "It was not that we intended to stop the construction specifically to spite them or anything like that, That's the law. If a project is out of compliance with [The California Environment Quality Act] it must stop," Musick said. (KGTV) -- The newest member of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park officially joined his herd Monday.Photos show the one-day-old calf, named Umzula-zuli, taking his first steps with the rest of the herd.The newest member of the zoo tipped the scales at more than 270 pounds, making him the largest calf ever born at the Safari Park.A newborn usually weighs 200 to 268 pounds. Construction is underway to build what leaders say will be an icon of the city.Spanning 108 ft wide, a new arch will be lifted 40 ft above the intersection of Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway."Escondido is just the hidden jewel of North County; in fact, Escondido means hidden valley and beautiful hidden valley. We're starting to live up to that more than I've ever seen," said Dan Forster.Forster owns Design Moe Kitchen & Bath and has watched new blood elevate the historic downtown over the last ten years, including restaurants, breweries, and new businesses. Also vice president of the Escondido Downtown Business Association, Forster says they've wanted a grand sign like this for years, but he says it was cost-prohibitive. Forster says that changed with an anonymous million donation made to the Escondido Charitable Foundation for the arch. "There's no money that's being taken out of the city budgets to pay for this, it's just one big beautiful sign," said Forster. Crews will raise the sign on March 3.
