BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Monday urged drivers to use extreme caution in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi in southern China which has been hit by freezing rains.Motorists were asked to strictly follow the instructions of traffic police and drive slowly after the expressways in the regions were reopened for use after being temporarily closed due to the severe weather.Freezing rains that swept south China's Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have caused road surfaces to ice up in parts of the Lanhai and Hukun Expressways.As a result, many vehicles in the regions were stranded.Local authorities have been ordered to take emergency measures to break up ice found on the roads, keep traffic moving and avoid shutting expressways.As of 4 p.m. Monday, the 1,500 vehicles that were stranded on Hukun Expressway near the juncture of Hunan and Guizhou provinces had safely reached Guizhou, traveling at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.Meanwhile, another 1,900 vehicles that had been stranded on National Highway 210 where Guangxi and Guizhou meet, have also reached Guizhou.Noting that Guizhou in the coming three days is expecting more icy rain, according to weather forecasts, Huang Ming, deputy minister at the MPS, stressed improved measures be taken to ensure traffic continues to flow in the region.

CHANGCHUN, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) - An electric short circuit in a shop was believed to be the cause of a shopping mall blaze that killed 19 people earlier this month in northeast China's Jilin Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said Thursday.The fire broke out on Nov. 5 in Jilin Commercial Building, Jilin City and lasted 12 hours. It left 19 people dead, 24 others injured and took fire fighters 10 hours to extinguish the flames, which ravaged 15,830 square meters of the five-storey mall.Investigations found that a short circuit in Sishulang Shop on the first floor of the mall was the cause of the fire.Police have detained 14 people in connection with the fatal blaze. The families of each of the victims have received at least 250,000 yuan (37,600 U.S. dollars) in compensation from the government.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.

NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- A seminar on how to improve China's multi-party cooperation and political consultation mechanism under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened here Tuesday.The seminar was held by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) with the attendence of 251 national political advisors.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met with the 251 advisors.Wang Gang, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, told the participants to the seminar that the top political task of the CPPCC for now and a future period is to study and implement the guiding principles of the 5th plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which concluded last month.The seminar will last four days.
