(KGTV) -- Charles Butler visits homes in San Diego, but he is not trying to sell anything. Butler is a code compliance officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue and makes sure brush surrounding homes is not out of control. “It’s the hillside we’re really concerned about, the canyon rim location,” Butler said. It is Wildfire Awareness Week in California. Assistant Fire Marshal Eddie Villavicencio said approximately 40,500 homes in San Diego are canyon rim properties, next to native or naturalized vegetation. If they don’t comply, they can face a second violation. By the third time, the property owner could be fined 0 and ultimately, forced abatement meaning the City will clean up your home. Fortunately, it usually does not have to go that far. “People are more proactive and more willing to create that proper defensible space,” Villavicencio said. However, there are challenges including a lack of staffing. Villavicencio said they do not visit as many homes as they would like to per year. That is all the more reason to do your part. “That’s the intent of the defensible space. It’s keeping small fires small, it’s giving fire operations time to respond to the fire and the space to fight the fire,” Villavicencio said. 2472

(KGTV) — A dog and tortoise had to be rescued from a Fontana property after becoming stuck in a hole together.The odd scene played out Wednesday, after San Bernardino County firefighters responded to a report of a man and dog falling into a hole. When responders arrived, the man was out of the hole but the dog, a German Shepard named Taylor, was still trapped, according to SBFD.Taylor had brought a blanket into the tunnel, dug by 70-pound tortoise named Godzilla. The blanket had wedged Taylor and Godzilla together and prevented them from getting free, firefighters say.Firefighters worked to untangle the two animals, digging away dirt from around the tunnel and coaxing Godzilla out with some lettuce until the two were free.Both animals belong to the property owner where the tunnel started, SBFD says. (KGTV and ABC) - A Pittsburgh dad who is working three jobs gave his daughter the dress of her dreams for her eighth-grade dance in a viral video.14-year-old Nevaeha Smith found a dress she loved for her eighth-grade dance at Ringgold Middle School in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, but realized that at 0, it might be too expensive."I said, 'Mom, dad, I want this dress,'" Nevaeha told ABC News. "Is it in our price range?""I looked at the price and I was like, 'Uh, not really sure, but I can see what I can do,'" said Ricky Smith, Nevaeha's father.Ricky works at McDonald’s, Popeye’s, and a Circle K convenience store to make ends meet. To earn enough for the dress, he worked extra shifts; occasionally working seven days a week.When Ricky saved enough money, he broke the news to Nevaeha's mom, Kelly Anne."She said, 'Why don’t you surprise her?'" said Ricky. Kelly Anne had her camera ready when Nevaeha stopped by McDonald’s to see her father."I was working at McDonald’s that day and I put the dress in the back," Ricky told ABC News. "She came and I brought it out and told her that her grandmother bought it for her and I told her, 'This ain’t the dress you wanted, but I hope you like it.'""I was thinking, 'This is going to be an old lady dress,'" said Nevaeha.The viral video showed Nevaeha sitting at a table as her father slowly revealed her heart’s desire. Her expression was shocked, followed by tears of joy. Nevaeha leaped out of her seat to hug her father."To see the look on her face it was priceless," said Ricky. "All I can really do was smile."Nevaeha could barely speak as she thanked her father."My heart felt like there was more love in it than there was before," said Nevaeha, describing the big moment.
