SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is providing free COVID-19 testing to all school employees returning to in-person learning, a recommendation by the California Department of Public Health.There are more than 80,000 school employees across the county. “This is everybody from bus drivers, to food service workers, to teachers, to administrators,” said Music Watson, the Chief of Staff for the San Diego County Office of Education, or SDCOE.While most schools are sticking with distance learning, for now, some are preparing to return to in-person learning starting in September.The school employees that do return will be tested for COVID-19 often.“The recommendation is that in any given two month period, you’ve tested 100% of school employees, with about half being tested in any given month,” said Watson. “People who are doing distance learning and teaching in a distance format and not coming into contact with students and school staff, they’re not going to have to be tested.”The county is partnering with SDCOE to develop more testing sites specifically for school employees by late September.Testing is currently available at the more than 20 county coordinated sites at no cost to school staff.If positive tests are discovered, classrooms, schools, and districts may need to shut down for two weeks.“If 5% of a classroom tests positive, that classroom would close, and they would self-isolate. If 5% of a school tests positive, the school would close for two weeks, and if 25% of district tests positive, the entire district would close for that two week self-isolation period,” said Watson. “In a classroom, 5% is basically one student or teacher, that’s why it’s so important to have a testing protocol in place.”If a classroom or school does have to shut down, students will continue learning for the two weeks.“That doesn’t mean all of a sudden it’s 14-days of no learning, it means transitioning to virtual which might be online or packet work depending on the particulars of that situation,” said Watson.It’s not currently recommended that asymptomatic children get tested for COVID-19, but if a parent or guardian wants their child tested, they should discuss it with their pediatrician. 2222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is paying out 5,000 after a violent police dog takedown.The man in a viral video sued the police department for excessive force.10News found out that this isn’t the first time the use of a police dog has been questioned.TIMELINE: San Diego K-9 bitesThe San Diego Police department has relied more on the K-9 unit in the last several years. Police say stats show a sharp increase in the number of times a police dog was deployed and someone was bitten from 2013 to 2016.There were also more dogs and handlers employed within that same three-year time period.Police say that has changed this year. Lt. Scott Wahl says the K-9 units have been to more than 12,000 calls resulting in only 37 bites.One of the more recent bites took place in October. In that incident, the K-9 put an end to a police chase in South Bay.Currently, there are 33 dogs and handlers. The dogs go through an initial 10-week training program followed by four hours of maintenance training a week and 15 minutes of obedience work every day. 1067

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League in San Diego announced a reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly shot at the Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro. According to the ADL, the temple became aware that the building had been struck by bullets in “recent days.” When exactly the building was targeted is unclear. The league says the bullet holes were discovered in a portion of the building not in use. San Diego Police are also investigating the incident, but the ADL says they don’t believe there is a “known continuing threat to Temple Emanu-El or other Jewish institutions in the area.”“ADL takes any report of violence against a religious institution extremely seriously, and will always commit our utmost effort and resources to securing justice for victims,” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “We hope that by offering this reward, someone with critical information for investigators will be motivated to speak out.“According to the ADL, 2018 saw a 27 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout California.
