SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santas are taking a big hit in 2020 for two big reasons: the pandemic and politics.During a typical December, Santas in San Diego would pop up at events, fundraisers, malls, parties and more. FORBS is the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, and the group meets and trains year-round to prepare the best Santas for the holiday season. This year, even these pros can’t find work.There are two big reasons for this. The first is one that is impacting most industries right now: the pandemic. Events and parties are canceled, and malls are hurting. At a mall, Santa usually would go through a line of kids, put them on his lap, and ask them what they want for Christmas this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting more reopening guidance, after hitting pause on reopening businesses last week due to community outbreaks.With Supervisor Nathan Fletcher as the only dissenting vote, the board voted to send a letter requesting state guidance on reopening wedding receptions, hotel meetings and conferences, street fairs, playgrounds, and team competitions.They heard from dozens of people pleading with them to help save their industries. "Our industry is struggling to survive. There are people still wanting to celebrate these events which is leading to bootleg events," said one caller who works in the event industry.Another woman called in to share the challenges of trying to plan a wedding." I've had to push my wedding back twice this year and have lost thousands of dollars due to the uncertainty of when private events will be allowed," said Rachel Lee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six San Diego State University students have been diagnosed with mumps in the last week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. All six of the students live off campus at BLVD63, an apartment complex not affiliated with the university. “These six mumps cases represent a small outbreak of this highly contagious viral disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best way to prevent mumps is by getting the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR vaccine.”RELATED: San Diego State student diagnosed with mumpsAs a result of the outbreak, the agency will be conducting free vaccination clinics at the apartment complex from 3 to 6 p.m. on February 27 and 28 for BLVD63 residents and SDSU students wishing to be immunized. A third dose is also being recommended for anyone who lives or works at BLVD63. “Student Health Services (SHS) was able to quickly respond to this public health concern and worked to isolate these students, as well as provide initial information to our campus community,” said Libby Skiles, SDSU's SHS Director. “In collaboration with the county, our team is supporting the impacted students and working to proactively protect the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”The cases come amid an uptick in local cases in recent months, health officials say.
