A Cincinnati teenager's trip to Santa's Wonderland today did not turn out as expected.13-year-old Carlo Averion showed up, and received a life-changing gift: digital glasses to help him see again. Averion suffers from Stargardt's Disease, a progressive disease that's causing him to lose his sight. The disease causes macular degeneration, and currently there is no cure for it. The glasses are manufactured by a company called E-Sight, and their website claims the glasses work through a mix of optical and computer technology "to stimulate he remaining photoreceptors in your eyes, sending more information to the brain and enhancing your ability to see clearly." These glasses were purchased with a combination of donated funds and grant money. "We have people that donated and we don't even know who they are, and we're very grateful for their generosity," said Lisa Averion, Carlo's mother. Carlo says he's excited to be able to see again, but he still has one simple wish:"When school starts back up, I just want to sit at my desk and read something on the board," he said. "It's really just the small things that I want to look at that people normally take for granted in life." A car plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians on a street in New Orleans, killing two people and injuring six others as the city celebrates Mardi Gras festivities.A majority of the people struck Saturday night were on bicycles, but it's unclear how many, Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said. Of the people injured, three are in critical condition.The driver, Tashonty Toney, 32, was arrested and faces several charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, hit and run, and reckless operation, the New Orleans Police Department tweeted.Toney was not injured, and had originally fled the scene, Ferguson said"We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been involved in a one-car accident," Ferguson said.Officers determined that the accident scene spanned several blocks of Esplanade Avenue. Earlier, police had said they are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated, and standard protocol involves breathalyzer and blood tests.Police did not provide details on the people killed or injured. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victims' identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified.While no motive is currently known, the incident does not appear connected to the Endymion parade, a Mardi Gras-related activity that was happening nearby, Ferguson said.The crash comes about two years after a drunken driver rammed into a crowd taking part in the Endymion parade, injuring at least 28 people. The driver in that 2017 crash, Neilson Rizzuto, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and reckless operation and hit-and-run driving.The Endymion parade is one of the most popular events leading up to Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday. A container filled with 90,000 bottles of vodka believed to be for sanctions-hit North Korea has been seized by Dutch customs agents, officials said Tuesday.Three-thousand cases of the spirit were found by officers at the port of Rotterdam aboard a ship owned by China's Cosco Shipping, said Roul Velleman, a spokesman for the Dutch customs agency.Velleman said officers decided to check the container based on a "risk profile" provided by the Foreign Ministry."We follow a risk profile and we had information that this container could be carrying something," Velleman said. A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook Puerto Rico Monday night, striking off the coast of the island in the Atlantic Ocean.The quake hit about 49 miles north-northwest of Isabela, Puerto Rico, around 11:23 p.m. ET, according to the United States Geological Survey.At least three aftershocks have followed the quake including a magnitude 4.7, USGS said.Puerto Rico Gov.
