(KGTV) -- Fires broke out around California amid strong Santa Ana winds Thursday afternoon, prompting quick response from firefighters around the state. Crews were able to quickly contain a fire that erupted in Fontana Thursday afternoon, according to the Associated Press. The blaze burned through backyards for about a quarter-mile, badly damaging one home and scorching the exterior of another. The fire burned 500 acres as of 4 p.m., according to KABC. The flames quickly ravaged a mobile home park, destroying at least 15 homes at the hilltop mobile home park. Meanwhile, several small brush fires sparked in Northern California as residents grappled with blackouts that, at one point, left nearly a million people in the dark. (KGTV) -- A former Marine has been sentenced to 17 years in state prison for driving drunk the wrong way on state Route 163 in Mission Valley, then crashing head-on into another car killing two UCSD medical students.Jason Riley King, 24, was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.According to testimony throughout the trial, several people told King that he was too drunk to drive, but he got behind the wheel anyway, driving the wrong way on state Route 163 and crashing into the Prius.The 2015 crash killed 23-year-old Madison Cornwell and 24-year-old Anne Li Baldock.  Three classmates also riding in the Prius were seriously injured.The crash inspired a new law in the state of California that will require all bartenders and servers to take a class on how to spot someone who’s had too much to drink.Following the crash, classmates of the victims worked with Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) on assembly bill 1221, also know as the Responsible Beverage Service Training Program Act of 2017.The law was approved by Governor Jerry Brown on October 15, 2017 and goes into effect July 1, 2021. 1164

(KGTV) — An asteroid discovered by Palomar Observatory is set to make a pass by Earth the day before the 2020 U.S. election.The asteroid, dubbed "2018 VP1," was first noticed by the San Diego County observatory on Nov. 3, 2018, according to data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It's estimated to measure about 5.9 and 12.8 feet in diameter.NASA is currently forecasting that the space rock will come between 4,800 to 260,000 miles of our atmosphere on Nov. 2. For comparison, the International Space Station is about 254 miles above the planet.The probability of 2018 VP1 impacting our planet is 1 in 240 or about 0.41%.NASA keeps a running list of potential asteroid threats to the planet. Currently, there are no immediate threats listed on the agency's website. The largest known risk is a 4,200-foot wide asteroid with a 0.012% chance of hitting Earth in 860 years. 884

(KGTV) - A baby badger, once lethargic and in need of care, is recovering after treatment at the San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife Center. The Department of Animal Services got a call Thursday about the badger in the Jewel Valley section of Boulevard in East San Diego County. The caller told animal experts the badger had not moved all day. An animal control officer responded to the scene and found the badger to be lethargic. The officer took the animal to the Humane Society facility on Gaines Street in Mission Valley for treatment. Veterinarians are bottle-feeding the badger, which weighs about two pounds, according to animal care expert Lauren DuBois. When the badger reaches adulthood, its diet will consist of small animals including ground squirrels and pocket gophers. DuBois said the badger will possibly be released to Fund for Animals in Ramona. Badgers can be aggressive and require ample space, according to DuBois. By Friday morning, Dan DeSousa, Director of Animal Services reported “the badger is doing well and is feisty.” Badgers, though rarely seen in San Diego, are native to the area, according to wildlife experts. “In my thirty years with Animal Services here in San Diego County, this is the first badger that our Department has ever encountered” said DeSousa. “We are thankful to have Project Wildlife here in our community to provide the needed care for these animals in their time of need.” Anyone who encounters a wild animal in distress can call 619-299-7012 to report the matter. 1532
