WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden is nominating the education commissioner in Connecticut to serve as secretary of the Department of Education.After initial reports, Biden confirmed Tuesday that he would like Miguel Cardona to take over the role that Secretary Betsy DeVos has held since President Donald Trump took office in 2017.Watch Biden introduce Cardona below:Cardona has served as his state’s commissioner of education since August 2019. He also taught for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Educational Leadership.Cardona is a low-profile candidate who The Washington Post says has pushed to reopen schools and hasn’t been aligned with any particular side in recent education policy battles. When schools moved to remote learning this year, The Associated Press reports Cardona hurried to deliver more than 100,000 laptops to students across The Constitution State.In his announcement, Biden said Cardona will lead the administration’s efforts to invest in all students, support educators, and make reopening schools safely a national priority. They hope to safely reopen the majority of classrooms within the first 100 days of Biden’s term.Biden says Cardona will strive to eliminate long-standing inequities and close racial and socioeconomic opportunity gaps — as well as expand access to community colleges, training and public four-year colleges and universities to improve student success and grow a stronger middle class.Cardona’s parents are from Puerto Rico. WASHINGTON, D.C. – As restrictions are eased around the country, several states are seeing higher rates of coronavirus infections.Data tracked by The Washington Post shows that since the beginning of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have recorded their highest seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.Those states include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, according to The Post.CNN reports that the number of states seeing upward trends in coronavirus cases is even higher, at 22.With many of these states, like Florida and Mississippi, now under only minor-to-moderate restrictions, health experts worry the spread of the virus could snowball in these areas and possibly overwhelm hospitals.The first wave of the pandemic moved through major metropolitan areas, like New York City and Los Angeles, but those cities are now moving towards reopening. Now, The Post reports that the highest percentages of new cases are coming from places with much smaller populations.As of Tuesday, more than 111,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. and over 1.96 million cases have been confirmed in the country, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University.There is some good news though. Researchers at Berkley University found that travel restrictions, business and school closures, shelter-in-place orders and other non-pharmaceutical interventions averted roughly 530 million COVID-19 infections across the six countries in the study period ending April 6.Of those infections, 62 million would likely have been “confirmed cases,” given limited testing in each country, researchers said. 1745

WASHINGTON (AP) — Using thousands of military troops to help secure the Southwest border will cost an estimated 0 million under current plans, the Pentagon told Congress on Tuesday, even as questions arose about the scope and duration of the controversial mission.The total includes million for approximately 5,900 active-duty troops providing support to Customs and Border Protection, plus 8 million so far for 2,100 National Guard troops who have been performing a separate border mission since April, according to a report sent to Congress on Tuesday but not released by the Pentagon.A copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press. After the AP published its story the Pentagon released a statement confirming the active-duty portion of the deployments is estimated at million. It did not mention the 8 million in National Guard costs.The total would grow beyond the current combined estimate of 0 million if the active-duty mission is extended beyond the current completion date of Dec. 15.
