BARCELONA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top Chinese negotiator for the United Nations climate change talks being held here said Tuesday that the Kyoto Protocol must be followed.     "China's position is quite clear: the Kyoto Protocol must be adhered to, since it best illustrates the principal of 'common but differentiated' responsibilities," said Su Wei, head of the Chinese delegation to the talks.     Su told Xinhua that during earlier negotiations, some countries had proposed discarding the Kyoto Protocol and adopting a totally new document at December's Copenhagen climate change meeting.     "This demand is strongly rejected by the Group of 77 and China, and other developing countries," Su said.     Su stressed that the Kyoto Protocol must be the legal basis for further negotiations at Copenhagen, and developed countries must fulfill their obligations under the protocol, which regulates that they should clarify their reduction targets in the second phase of the protocol.     "If this basic arrangement is changed, the future of the Copenhagen meeting would be greatly shadowed," Su said.     The deal to be reached at the Copenhagen conference, Su said, should have two basic elements.     One element is to set the mid-term emission reduction targets for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol. That is, developed countries as a whole should commit to making 25-40 percent cuts below 1990 levels by 2020.     The second element is to make substantial arrangements for the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with the Bali Roadmap.     "We hope we could lay a good foundation for the Copenhagen conference through negotiations at this meeting," Su said.

HARBIN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed new year greetings to workers, farmers, local residents and officials during his visit to northeastern Heilongjiang Province on the first two days of the year.     Braving the freezing weather, Wen visited the cities of Daqing and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang. It was Wen's third visit to Daqing since 2003. At Daqing oilfield, he said Daqing people had not only produced two billion tonnes of oil for the country, but also the invincible Daqing spirit which was kept well over the past five decades. BUCHAREST, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that China values its ties with Romania and is willing to work with the Romanian people to enhance cooperation and cement friendship. Xi made the remarks when meeting with people from all walks of life in Romania, including parliament leaders, government officials, former ambassadors to China and others.     The Chinese and the Romanian people enjoy profound friendship, Xi said. They have respected and supported each other and treated each other on an equal footing since the two countries established diplomatic ties 60 years ago. CAIRO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Delivering a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, capital of Egypt, on Saturday, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao described the world as full of colors and with different civilizations which constitute cultural diversity.     The history of human civilization has testified that cultural diversity is necessary for human prosperity, and dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations have formed an irreversible historical trend and a necessity for the improvement and continuous development of civilizations.     "Dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations form the powerful current of human civilization surging ahead ceaselessly," Wen said.     Today's world is home to over 200 countries and regions, more than 2,500 ethnic groups and 6,000-plus languages, the Chinese premier cited just a few numbers to demonstrate the diversity.     Under the current international circumstance which is undergoing profound and complex changes featuring increasingly deepened world multi-polarization and economic globalization, peace and development remain the two main themes facing the human society.
