INDIANAPOLIS -- A splash of color painted the streets of Vice President Mike Pence's hometown of Columbus, Indiana on Saturday as the town hosted its first-ever Pride Festival. The colorful event featured live music, food and even a drag competition. This small town festival made big news because hometown boy, Vice President Mike Pence is known for being a conservative Christian who signed the 2015 religious protections law that created a legal defense for businesses that objected to serving LGBTQ customers. Columbus High School senior Erin Bailey, 18, came up with the idea and helped bring it to life. She said she hopes that Columbus Pride helps make the town a more welcoming place for everyone. PHOTOS | Columbus' first-ever Pride Festival?"We've never had anything like this in Columbus and were such a town with diversity and we have such a great community," said Bailey. "I thought that I should do something like this for it."Vice President Pence has weighed in on the festival in his hometown, commending Bailey for her activism and engagement in the civic process.  1135

In the month since news broke of allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Harvey Weinstein, about 1 in 5 Americans said close friends or family members shared stories about sexual harassment or assault on social media, according to a CNN poll.Headlines about the scandal and the culture in which it flourished were just as ubiquitous, especially as other powerful men were called out. About 66% of people said they've heard a lot of news stories about sexual harassment and assault lately, according to the same poll.But what do people really think of all this coverage and the impact it will have? The CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that most people are hopeful that the surge of attention on sexual harassment and assault could help make things better. 776

It’s said nothing last forever.While tattoo artists might argue that doesn’t apply to their work, their actual ability to work isn’t as long lasting.Since the COVID-19 crisis hit, tattoo artists across the world have been forced to shut down their shops.“So basically, there’s no income,” said Ariel Wei, a tattoo artist at Blindreason Tattoo in New York City. “There are no appointments at all."Wei’s tattoo gun has gone mostly silent since mid-March.Across the Canadian border in Ottawa, Ontario, not working has impacted tattoo artist Nate Silverii more than just financially. It’s hurt him emotionally.“I was at a loss for like, ‘what am I doing? Do I even try to continue to try to do this?,’” said Silverii, a tattoo artist at Deerhound Studio.Now, a company that makes temporary tattoos is leaving a permanent mark on this industry.“(Tattoo artists) are kind of left out to the wolves when stuff like this happens to them,” said Tyler Handley with InkBox Tattoos, a company that offers temporary tattoos for adults that last up to two weeks.To help tattoo artists make money during the pandemic, Handley’s team started the Forgotten Artists campaign where InkBox turns tattoo artists' designs into temporary tattoos and then pays the artist for every one sold.So far, this program has helped raise about million worldwide“They’ve been amazing to work with. You know, super cool,” Silverii said of InkBox.While every little bit of extra income helps, artists say the added exposure to a larger audience is being viewed as an investment.“During lockdown, it helped me financially and also my creativity,” Wei said.It gives tattooers the ability to share their craft and helps make their art last forever.“I’d absolutely tell other artists if they have the chance to do it,” Silverii said. “100% do it.” 1822

  

It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. Some customers canceled their orders because of concerns about nearby wildfires impacting his grapes.“Negative effects can manifest themselves later on after fermentation and during barrel aging,” Wolff said. “So, they basically backed out of agreements.”Millions of acres have recently burned across California, Oregon and Washington, areas that produce 85% of the country’s wine.“It’s the first time in recent history that fires have impacted so many different wine grape growing regions,” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D. with the University of California, Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.She says America’s wine tourism is already struggling due to COVID-19 and that these fires could cost the industry even more through job loss and damaged products.“The problem with this year is the fires started much earlier than our harvest season,” Oberholster said. “About 10% of the grapes have been harvested and the rest were still on the vine. 2020 is not our year.”For many wineries, smoke taint of grapes is so severe, there might not be a 2020 vintage.“The 2020 vintage is going to be one where we’ll have a limited amount of high-quality wines,” Wolff said.While Wolff is working to keep his products from going down the drain and letting his wine go to waste, he says many in the industry are dealing with fire fatigue and that an increase in cost linked to these fires could be felt in years to come.“2023 probably particularly with reds is when impacts will be felt,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, but we’ll be a little black and blue.” 1930
