'Tis the season to shop till you drop, but before you pull out your wallet, check out these tips on saving some cash. No, it’s not through couponing or searching for deals online. It starts with what you do when you walk through the doors of a store. Whether you're aware of it or not, a store is laid out in a very specific way to get you to spend more. Those huge shopping carts are always conveniently placed right as you walk in, but the small baskets seem harder to find. The store's hope is that you'll fill up that shopping cart with more items than if you had a small basket. Gone are the days of stores playing elevator music to create a sense of calmness. Now, it’s all about upbeat music to create a happy atmosphere, hoping you want to stay and shop longer. Just like speed bumps on a road, stores place tables, clothing racks and other obstacles around businesses to get customers to slow down and look at more items. How about those big signs that say, “buy one, get the next one half off?” Seems like a great deal, that is if you’re planning on buying two. If you only need one, buying another half off is still getting you to spend more than you were planning. And when you're ready to try on clothes, don't be tricked by the sale rack that’s usually placed right by the dressing rooms. It's one last chance for stores to get you to pick up more items. Oh and here's one last tip: you're going to see a lot of discount signs with 10, 20 maybe even 50% off an item, but consumer experts say nothing is a deal unless it's 30% off or more. 1561
The Trump administration is proposing a rollback of nutrition guidelines for school meals that had been promoted by Michelle Obama as part of her campaign to combat child obesity. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the rule changes are needed to give schools more flexibility and reduce waste while still providing nutritious and appetizing meals. But child nutrition advocates say the change will result in fewer fruits and vegetables and more fries, pizza and other unhealthy foods in the meals served at school. Perdue announced the proposed rule on Obama's birthday. 587

Trooping guards with bearskin hats, guns blasting at the Tower of London and a spot of afternoon tea launched President Donald Trump's long-awaited state visit to the United Kingdom on Monday. The elaborate displays of hospitality did little to prevent Trump from dispatching insults over Twitter as he descended into London. It was an appropriate start to a visit laced with controversy and steeped in tradition, delivered by a fractured nation for a hard-to-please guest."I think it'll be very important," Trump predicted as he departed the White House on Sunday evening. "It certainly will be very interesting."Indeed, the dramatics began even before Air Force One had touched down at Stansted Airport outside London. As he was descending, the President tweeted an insult of London's mayor, calling Sadiq Khan a "stone cold loser" for being "foolishly 'nasty' to the visiting President of the United States."Trump and Khan have engaged in a transatlantic spat over terrorism and security, and this week Khan called Trump "one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat" 1097
The US Women's National Team sealed the deal with its fourth stunning victory Sunday at the World Cup, but the players are still fighting another battle back home. The soccer team's 2-0 victory against the Netherlands proved that the US women are still at the top of the game -- and, the athletes say, that they should be paid as equal to men."At this moment of tremendous pride for America, the sad equation remains all too clear, and Americans won't stand for it anymore. These athletes generate more revenue and garner higher TV ratings but get paid less simply because they are women," said Molly Levinson, spokeswoman for the USWNT players in their equal pay lawsuit."It is time for the Federation to correct this disparity once and for all."In March, 28 members of the USWNT sued the US Soccer Federation for allegedly discriminating by paying the women less than members of the men's national team "for substantially equal work and by denying them at least equal playing, training, and travel conditions; equal promotion of their games; equal support and development for their games; and other terms and conditions of employment equal to the MNT."The soccer federation and the plaintiffs last month tentatively agreed to mediation, which is expected to begin now that the World Cup is over.During the celebrations Sunday, the crowd at the soccer stadium in Lyon chanted, "Equal pay" in support of the women's efforts. 1435
