In an order laced with language accusing President Donald Trump of attempting to rewrite immigration laws, a federal judge based in San Francisco temporarily blocked the government late Monday night from denying asylum to those crossing over the southern border between ports of entry.Judge Jon S. Tigar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said that a policy announced November 9 barring asylum for immigrants who enter outside a legal check point '"irreconcilably conflicts" with immigration law and the "expressed intent of Congress.""Whatever the scope of the President's authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden," Tigar wrote, adding that asylum seekers would be put at "increased risk of violence and other harms at the border" if the administration's rule is allowed to go into effect. The temporary restraining order is effective nationwide and will remain in effect until December 19, when the judge has scheduled another hearing, or further order of the court. The order is the latest setback for the administration that has sought to crack down on what it says are flaws in the immigration system, and it is a victory for the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups who argued it is illegal to block someone based on how they entered the country."This ban is illegal, will put people's lives in danger and raises the alarm about President Trump's disregard for separation of powers," said the ACLU's Lee Gelernt."There is no justifiable reason to flatly deny people the right to apply for asylum, and we cannot send them back to danger based on the manner of their entry," he said.Earlier this month, the President issued a proclamation referring to "large, organized groups" who were traveling through Mexico and "reportedly intend to enter the United States unlawfully or without proper documentation and to seek asylum."It said that those seeking entry can only do so temporarily at recognized ports of entry to allow for "orderly processing" and denied entry to those at any other location along the southern border. 2178

If you bought tickets to try and win Tuesday night’s huge Mega Millions jackpot, don’t forget to check your tickets even if you don’t win the jackpot.Americans don't claim about billion worth of lotto winnings every year, according to research.Jim Davidson always checks his tickets, even if he doesn't win big, and it's paid off.“For the lotto, I think that one was like a 0 payout,” Davidson explains. “Wasn't millions, but it was a good hit.Lottery officials say that's what all players should do after a drawing.  Experts say Americans forego roughly billion in lottery winnings every year. And the higher the drawing, the higher the likelihood of multiple smaller unclaimed prizes.“Check your numbers. It's really important to check those numbers,” says Jennifer Churchill with the Colorado Lottery. “You may have won 0 bucks; you may have won ,000 bucks.”Often times, winners don’t realize they’ve won.“People have carried around tickets for a length of time, not realizing that they have a winner either of a lower amount or even jackpots,” Churchill says. “We've actually had people hit jackpots and not come in for them.”Machines that check tickets can be found in almost every store where you can purchase a ticket. With Mega Millions, it only takes two matching numbers to win something. 1325

IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) - A man was arrested Saturday in Imperial Beach after residents say he rushed into a home and wrecked their bathroom, leaving blood everywhere. Resident Miguel Ledesma said their front door was open to let in the breeze, "I heard some noise behind me and I turned around and the door was wide open, so I saw him rush through." The man was mumbling about being chased. Ledesma said the man backed up, tripping over the Christmas tree, knocking it over in the process, and went into the bathroom. Ledesma said that's when his brother shut the door to protect the family."There were screams, the lady who lives in there she was screaming pretty loudly," Neighbor Matthew Rodriguez said."We started hearing all these noises, all the breaking, the mirror, the shower curtain, everything in there is destroyed, there's bloody pretty much," Ledesma said. Officers finally removed the man, handcuffing him. The man was later loaded into an ambulance. He had visible cuts on his neck and arms, and a bandage around his head. Ledesma said he came in without a scratch and left bloody."It was pretty scary because we didn't know what he was going to do before the cops showed up," Rodriguez said."We're all okay, he didn't take anything, he just destroyed the bathroom pretty much," Ledesma said. He said they reached out to the property manager to get the bathroom fixed, but his mother was already cleaning with bleach. 1440

If you love bacon and beer, well, good news. Waffle House is collaborating with a brewing company in Georgia to produce a bacon-infused beer called Waffle House Bacon & Kegs.According to the Oconee Brewing Company, the beer is a 6.5 percent ABV red ale that will be available beginning Dec. 18 in a six-pack or on draft exclusively at the brewing company."The beloved scent of bacon stands out from the typical medium hop aroma of a red ale. The malty sweetness of the base beer blends perfectly with the salty, savory, and smokey bacon extract to create a delicious and unique beer," the brewery said on its website. "Bacon & Kegs pairs well with breakfast food items (obviously!) or can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, soon to be iconic beer."The packaging - that was created by agency Brock Company Creative - features the beer's name using the iconic lettering of the Waffle House sign, alongside a drawing of a Waffle House restaurant. 953

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — Though it stands nearly 20-feet tall, The Spirit of Imperial Beach eludes some residents.  The 18-foot tall statue of a bronze surfer holding a longboard at his side stands tall just north of Imperial Beach Pier. At the foot of the statue, two children building sandcastles. The statue, designed by artist A. Wasil, was dedicated on Jan. 3, 2009, and aims to honor the IB community's cherished surfing and sandcastle history. Many consider IB one of the birthplaces of surfing.SURFINGImperial Beach has continued to provide both challenging and easy-going waves for surfers. Not only those who take to the waves, but those who design and shape boards have called IB home.According to the city, pioneers of surfing came to the Tijuana Sloughs as early as 1937 to shape their sport. While at times the waters in IB close to Mexico are in no condition to swim, the city remains proud of its place in surfing history. Not only does the statue commemorate surfing culture, but IB's outdoor surfboard museum also honors 25 prominent surfboard shapers, nine of which are local.SAND CASTLESSandcastles played a prominent role at Imperial Beach for more than 30 years. Castles, sea animals, and more were carefully crafted on the shoreline during the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. The event was canceled in 2011, due to increasing costs and a lack of volunteers. This gave rise to IB's Sun & Sea Festival, which has given a home for sand sculptors to continue their creative work. 1554
