People have supported us unbelievably,” Nighttown owner Brendan Ring said. “That's what made it even more difficult for me to make the decision to hit the pause button here again until the complications are sort of under control.”Nighttown closed Sunday, voluntarily shutting down in response to the rising COVID-19 cases in the area and will remain closed until sometime in the spring, according to Ring.“It's going to be a hard winter in the restaurant business,” Ring said.Just before the restaurant closed Sunday, a customer dining with his family approached the bar and ordered a single beer.“He literally took two small sips out of it, signed his check and left,” bartender Heather Sandow said.After signing his check, the man handed his credit card receipt to Ring on his way out.“He put it down next to me and he wished me well and said, 'Share this with your staff,'” Ring said.Ring quickly noticed the tip amount.“I quickly glanced down and it looked like a 0 tip. And I go, ‘Wow, that's a nice tip for a guy that just had a beer,’” Ring said. “Then I put my reading glasses on. My eyes almost popped out of my head.”The generous customer left a ,000 tip on the single beer purchase. For those curious, that is a 42,735% tip.“One girl point blank didn't believe what she was staring at,” Ring said. “She said, ‘No, that's not real.’”Ring said he ran after the man, thinking there had been a mistake. The man confirmed the tip was intentional.“That gentleman that left a tip yesterday, he’d be indicative of the type of customer we have here in Cleveland Heights. Just true, loyal and giving,” Ring said.Sandow said the relationship between customers and staff for the last 25 years is what sets Nighttown apart.“It's not all about money. I think personally, it's more about the gesture that was made and the unselfishness that was demonstrated,” Sandow said. “The customers have been coming here over the years. They do care about us.”As Ring temporarily closed the doors to his business and is now planning for the future, he said he will reflect on the parting words of the kind customer.“We'll be back. Arnold Kee has always pushed his two sons to do well in school. Then, an email he received from their high school last year alarmed him. It alerted parents about high levels of lead found in the water. “Fortunately, they've both done well, but it's the type of thing that makes you wonder would they have performed even better had they not been exposed to whatever lead was in the system,” Kee says. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even low levels of lead can cause behavior and learning problems, including lower IQ scores. The school replaced water fountains and installed filters at the school designed to reduce lead. “What I like is the idea of the school being proactive and trying to address it, but then also the city itself trying to address it, because I do think it takes more than the just the city to be on top of what's happening,” Kee says. Washington, D.C. law now requires filters to be put on water fountains at schools, daycares and even at parks. However, D.C.’s efforts are the exception. An alarming report by Environment America found most schools are not doing enough to protect students from drinking water contaminated with lead. “We see pervasive contamination of drinking water at schools and pre-schools across the country,” says John Rumpler, co-author of the report.The report looked at states across the country and found most received failing grades. Millions of children are being exposed to lead from contaminated pipes and drinking fountains. “If your kid’s school was built before 2014, chances are the pipes, the plumbing, the fountains, the faucets have significant amounts of lead in them and those faucets and fountains should be replaced and filters should be put on,” Rumpler says.Rumpler urges parents to pressure their schools and lawmakers to make those changes. Hurricanes Irma and Michael caused catastrophic damage and triggered more than billion in claims.Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) says the storms and rampant lawsuits against insurance carriers are driving the steep hikes in rates."They are filing more and more lawsuits they know some of these insurance companies will settle, and ultimately those costs are passed on to homeowners," he said.Insurance Industry watchdog The Federal Association for Insurance Reform points to thousands of lawsuits filed by contractors. President Paul Handerhan says roofers, plumbers and others solicit homeowners through ads, calls or door knocks and convince them to file an insurance claim. She said the roofer told her that "other than a minor deductible, the whole cost for the repairs, including the facia and soffits, would be covered."The I-team checked court records and found Smart Storm Solutions filed over 300 lawsuits against insurers, including Linda Cempe's carrier in 2019 alone.Smart Storm Solutions staff attorney Robert MacKinnon says the company will only canvas neighborhoods with known storm damage. He also said the company files cases when insurance companies refuse to pay the full cost of a claim."They are confirmed claims we are arguing over the extent of damages," MacKinnon said.Smart Storm Solutions also sued Larry Kohman's insurance company over his claim after cold calling the homeowner about roof damage.We checked and found court documents showing the Kohmans' insurer settled with Smart Storm Solutions over a year ago. But the contractor never returned to replace the roof."We don't sleep much," Larry said, who explained he and his wife constantly worried about the growing amount of water damage in their home caused by a leaky roof.Smart Storm Solutions' attorney blamed the pandemic for the delay in Kohman's case and apologized, saying the company should have communicated better. ABBOTT PARK, Ill. – As the coronavirus continues to spread and the need for more testing grows with it, labs across the U.S. are racing to get approval for their tests for COVID-19. The company Abbott is one of them. “Abbott was able to get an emergency use authorization for a new test, molecular test for the SARS-coronavirus-2,” said John Hackett, Jr., the Divisional Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott. Researchers inside their Illinois lab created a test that can be used with the company’s testing system, called “m2000 RealTime.” That’s key because the company says that system is already widely available in hospitals and testing labs around the country. “These are in hospitals and academic centers and this is where the test volume is,” Hackett said. The speed in regulatory approval from the FDA for the test was unprecedented. The company said that, normally, it can take several years to get a test approved; this one happened in a matter of weeks. Their testing system can run through 470 patient tests per day. “This is a massive impact when you think about trying to get results back to the physicians,” Hackett said. “This is actionable information - either a person's infected or they're not.” About 150,000 tests are now on their way to hospitals and labs in 18 states – including New York, California and Washington – some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. The company plans to be producing a million tests a week by the end of this month.
