BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Routine bowel screening can cut deaths from bowel cancer by 27 percent, a latest Scottish study finds.The result was presented at the National Cancer Research Institute's (NCRI) conference in Liverpool. Funded by the Scottish government's health department, the study involved over 370,000 people aged 50 to 69 from Scotland. Every participant was given a FOBt (faecal occult blood test) kit-- which was used to collect their stool samples-- every two years between 2000 and 2007. The samples were sent to a laboratory for hidden traces of blood test.Under the monitor of the researchers, the participants saw a 27 percent fewer bowel cancer deaths than a similar number of people from Scotland uninvolved in the trial."For the first time, we can see the effects of an FOBt-based colorectal cancer screening program in the real world of the NHS," cheered author Robert Steele from the Bowel Screening Research Centre in Dundee.According to a BBC report, when bowel cancer is detected at the earliest stage, 90% of patients survive for at least five years. After the disease has spread, the survival rate is just 6%.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Cisco Systems Inc., the world 's biggest networking equipment maker, on Wednesday reported that its profit fell about 7.9 percent in the most recent quarter.In the company's fiscal 2012 first quarter ending on Oct. 29, Cisco posted its net income of nearly 1.78 billion U.S. dollars, compared with 1.93 billion dollars in the same period a year earlier.Excluding some items, earnings per share in the quarter were 43 cents, better than the 39 cents estimated by analysts, according to Bloomberg.Cisco's sales in the quarter reached 11.26 billion dollars, an increase of 4.7 percent year-on-year and also topped analysts' projection of about 11 billion dollars."We delivered a solid quarter," John Chambers, Cisco's chief executive officer, said in a statement."We've completed the majority of our restructuring and have organized Cisco to successfully execute against our strategy of providing intelligent networks, architectures and integrated products that solve customers' business problems," he added.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A vagrant boy sat all huddled up in a corner of Beijing Railway Station, trying to keep himself warm in the chilly wind on Tuesday afternoon.He could only remember that he was 16 and that his home was far away from Beijing but failed to provide other vital information such as his name or home address.Two officials from the social assistance center for the homeless in Beijing's Dongcheng district came to his assistance within half an hour of receiving a passer-by's call. The boy was taken to the center's office for some paper work and then sent to a shelter for the homeless in Fengtai district.A teenager, unsure of his identity and living on a street corner near Beijing Railway Station, is helped by China Daily photographer Wang Jing on Tuesday before being taken to a care center."Our center handles about three or four similar cases every month. Those whose family cannot be contacted immediately are sent to the shelter," said Cao Hui, an official who came to the railway station to pick up the boy.The method of collecting vagrants and sending them to shelters would include an extra step by 2013, according to a notice jointly issued by eight government departments, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), on Monday.The circular required the public security, urban management authorities and rescue centers nationwide to collect blood samples from vagrant children. Their DNA information will be recorded and checked against the national DNA database to see if these could be matched with that of missing children's parents', in case they were kidnapped or stolen by criminals.The eight government departments will start a year-long national campaign in 2012, aiming to return street children to their homes, which will be led by the MCA.The MCA urged provincial governments to set up special offices to coordinate the campaign.Civil Affairs minister Li Liguo said on Monday that the ministry will speed up revising the management regulations related to the homeless and beggars in cities, introduced in 2003. Detailed rules about how different government departments should cooperate with each other to help vagrant children would be formulated in the revised regulation.The notice also urged the civil affairs authorities to organize social workers to provide one-on-one psychological counseling and aid services to street children.Educational authorities in locations where the vagrant children are originally from are required to facilitate their returning to schools or vocational institutions. Those from poor families can have their school fees reduced or waived.Yu Jianrong, a professor with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and an initiator of a grassroots campaign to help child beggars, begun in January, applauded the government's consistent efforts to help street children to resume a normal life."The notice definitely shows the government's determination to keep children away from begging or performing on the street.""However, seeing no vagrant children on the street doesn't mean all problems have been solved. BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhuanet) --  China is likely to test a new Internet protocol in the next few years in an attempt to further develop the country's Internet, senior officials from the State Council said on Friday.The country will put the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)-based network into small-scale commercial pilot use by the end of 2013, and deploy and commercialize the IPv6-based network on a large scale between 2014 and 2015, according to a statement released after an executive meeting of the State Council that was presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao."The development of IPv6 is one of the most important tasks for China's Internet industry during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, from 2011 to 2015," said Hu Qiheng, director-general of the Internet Society of China.Analysts believe the transition from the latest Internet protocol, IPv4, to IPv6 is irreversible. This year, the pool of Internet addresses in IPv4 has come close to being tapped out, and the supply of domain names has run short.Compared with IPv4, IPv6 will offer more IP addresses and, for that reason, more devices will be able to connect directly to the Internet, said Microsoft Corp, one of the main technical supporters of IPv6.By 2010, China had about 278 million IPv4 addresses, according to data from the China Internet Network Information Center. That was far fewer than the 450 million Internet users who live in the country."This is the first time the government has issued a schedule for IPv6 development, and it will benefit the entire industry," said Chen Qi, deputy general manager of BII Group Holding Ltd, an IPv6 service provider based in Beijing.IPv6 will enable telecommunication operators to allocate more IP addresses to their clients and will probably bring more users to those operators, Chen said.Five Chinese telecommunications carriers, including China Telecom Corp and China Mobile Ltd, had established IPv6 networks as early as 2006, the New York Times reported.China will need "far too many" IPv6 addresses in the coming years, according to Paul Wilson, director general of Asia Pacific Network Information Center, an organization responsible for allocating IP addresses.The profits made by Chinese manufacturers of telecommunications equipment, such as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corporation, will also increase, a result partly of a rise in the demand for routers and Internet switches, Chen said.China launched the construction of the next-generation Internet in 2003, featuring the IPv6 network as a key technology. Even though IPv6 has not been put into commercial use, Chinese universities are among the first institutions to connect to IPv6.
