China's production of natural gas rose 23.1 percent last year, faster than in 2006, to 69.31 billion cubic meters as the country used more "clean" energy, an industry association said.In 2006, output jumped 19.2 percent to 58.55 billion cubic meters, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) said. It also said that output would likely hit 76 billion cubic meters this year. China used 55.6 billion cubic meters of gas in 2006, an increase of 21.6 percent from a year earlier, according to statistics from BP.China has set a target of raising the proportion of natural gas in its total energy consumption to 5.3 percent in 2010 from 2.8 percent in 2005, amid efforts to curb pollution. Coal now accounts for about 70 percent of total energy consumption. The expansion of the natural gas infrastructure, including pipelines, reflected the rapid increases in output and consumption, the CPCIA said.China plans to start building a second east-west gas pipeline this year. The first such pipeline went into commercial operation in 2004.The new pipeline is scheduled to become operational in 2010 and will have a designed annual transport capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. It will mainly move natural gas from Central Asia to the Yangtze and Pearl River Deltas, the country's two most developed regions.Construction on another pipeline, which will link the Puguang Gas Field in the southwestern province of Sichuan, one of the country's largest, with the Yangtze River Delta, started last August.

BEIJING - China's food watchdog issued an emergency circular on Wednesday to ensure food safety in the face of severe winter weather that has blocked transport and endangered supplies in much of central, eastern and southern China. The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) ordered all the local food and drug bureaus to tighten inspections of food production and sale facilities so as to prevent inferior or fake food from entering the market. The snow, the heaviest in decades in many places, has been falling in China's east, central and southern regions since January 10, causing building collapses, power blackouts, highway closures and crop destruction. The SFDA ordered all local bureaus to maintain food market order and to prosecute law violations, noting supplies of some foods was already tight. The extreme weather in the past two weeks hit as Chinese travelers began one of the world's biggest annual mass migrations for the Chinese Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, the most important festival for Chinese family gatherings. The SFDA also ordered local bureaus to promptly report and tackle emergencies and prevent mass incidents of food poisoning.

Hong Kong is the destination of choice for most mainland travelers this Christmas, a survey has found.A child walks past a Christmas decoration at the Two IFC shopping mall in Hong Kong November 28, 2007. [Agencies]Forty-four percent of the 2,000 people polled, all of whom have an annual income of more than 60,000 yuan (,000), said they were planning to visit the region over the festive period.Other popular destinations included Shanghai (10 percent), Sanya in Hainan Province (9 percent), Lijiang in Yunnan Province, Bali in Indonesia, Phuket in Thailand and Harbin in Heilongjiang Province.Conducted by the online travel firm ctrip.com, the survey found people were most interested in places with a "strong holiday atmosphere", "good shopping environment" and "excellent hotels and beaches" when choosing a destination for their Christmas getaway.Tang Yibo, director of Ctrip.com's holiday department, said: "Embodying both Eastern and Western cultures, Hong Kong stands out because it has not only a vibrant Christmas atmosphere, but also offers lots of shopping and entertainment facilities, and big discounts at this time of year."The convenience of traveling between the mainland and Hong Kong is also an important factor, Tang said.Lin Nan, a teacher from Shanghai, who sets off on a three-day trip to Hong Kong this weekend, said: "The pre-Christmas discounts in Hong Kong are irresistible, even when you consider what you have to pay to fly there."Lin Kang, deputy general manager of the outbound tourism department of the China International Travel Service Head Office, said tour packages to Hong Kong are always bestsellers at Christmas. He said the reason was that Chinese do not have much time off work at Christmas and the New Year so they cannot travel too far."When it comes to the weeklong Spring Festival holiday, destinations like Europe will be more popular," he said.Packages for the Spring Festival are now available, he said, with some of them to Australia and New Zealand already sold out. Some travel experts have said the high volume of holiday bookings for this year's Spring Festival is due to the cancellation of the May Day holiday. But Lin disagreed, saying it is still too early to judge the impact of the changes to the national holiday schedule. Outbound tours during the Spring Festival holiday are always easy to sell, he said. The cost of tour packages during the spring holiday will, as usual, be at least 20 percent higher than at other times of the year, he said.Zhang Wei, director of the air ticket department of Ctrip.com, said the cost of air travel to Europe, Australia and North America over the Christmas and New Year holidays has also soared. He said the cheapest one-way ticket from Beijing to London is now 3,320 yuan, up from 2,200 yuan at the start of the year.Zhang said the price hikes are due to the high numbers of foreigners flying home for the festive season, and also the increased popularity of group trips offered as staff incentives by some Chinese firms.

Clashes erupt between members of the ethnic Chinese community and Italian riot police in Milan April 12, 2007. [Reuters]China has made representations to the Italian government after at least 10 Chinese nationals were injured during a clash with local riot police in Milan on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday. "We hope the Italian side deals fairly with the issue and seriously considers the justified demands of local Chinese nationals and takes real measures to protect their legitimate rights and interests," a statement on the ministry's website said. The conflict was sparked by a dispute over parking between a local Chinese woman and a police officer. The woman was detained after the argument turned into a physical clash, according to the Foreign Ministry. The situation escalated when hundreds of local Chinese protested over the detention of the woman, which led to the conflict. Of the Chinese nationals injured in the clash, five have been released from hospital after treatment, the ministry said. The scuffle broke out in the city's busy Chinatown area. Protesters reportedly threw plastic bottles and rubbish bins at police armed with batons. "It is not right for a violation of road regulations to cause this," Milan's mayor Letizia Moratti was quoted as saying. "This cannot be justified." Protesters complained about the police violence, with some saying one of the demonstrators had been pistol whipped. The ministry said in the statement that the situation had eased.

CHANGSHA -- Central China's Hunan Province said it has taken effective measures to prevent epidemics after about 2 billion rats chomped their way through cropland around the Dongting Lake, the country's second largest freshwater lake. "It's not possible for rodent-borne diseases to break out in the lake area," said Chen Xiaochun, vice director of the provincial health department. Local health authorities have been watching closely over the rodent situation after the rats fled their flooded island homes and invaded 22 counties around the Dongting Lake last week, he told a press conference on Wednesday. Results of their observation are reported daily to the provincial health department and the public, he said. Meanwhile, local health and disease prevention and control authorities have intensified management of raticide and pesticide, for fear they might contaminate food and water, Chen added. No human infection of any rat-borne disease has been reported in the central Chinese province since 1944. The provincial government also ruled out widespread suspicions that rats flooded the area because one of their natural enemies -- snakes -- had been served at dinner tables. "The Dongting Lake area is not an ideal habitat for snakes," said Deng Sanlong, a top forestry official in the province, "and the only two species that inhabitate the region feed largely on fish and frogs." He said the top enemy of the rats are hawks that spend winter in the wetland around the lake but fly away in spring. China's Ministry of Agriculture and the Hunan provincial government have allocated 900,000 yuan in total to eradicate the rats.
