LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Imagine swimming when suddenly hundreds of fins start gliding through the water around you.Local beachgoers may be familiar with the sight, as shown in recently captured drone video in La Jolla. The video shows a mesmerizing view of the massive grouping of leopard sharks, about 4- to 5-foot long, swimming off the coast.Andrew Nosal, a professor and marine biologist at University of San Diego, recorded the video Monday — he also studied the sharks extensively for his dissertation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.According to Nosal, the gathering, while perhaps intimidating to some, isn't all that rare.RELATED: Killer whale pod preys on dolphins off Southern California coast"Group formation ... is a common behavior for leopard sharks. In La Jolla, these leopard sharks are mostly (over 95%) mature pregnant females," Nosal said. "They appear to be attracted to this site because of its calm, warm water, which we hypothesize speeds up the rate of embryonic development."Leopard sharks give birth every spring after a 10- to 11-month gestation period.The sharks may also be attracted to food in the area, Nosal added, as they feed on squid, octopus, crabs, and small fish in nearby submarine canyons at night.RELATED: Dad captures son wakeboarding with dolphins off San Diego coastAnd while from above the sight of hundreds of sharks may alarm some, leopard sharks aren't considered threatening to humans as long as their space is respected."If a human grabs their tails, for example, the sharks may defend themselves by swinging around and biting the offender," Nosal said. "So, beachgoers should resist the temptation to touch or harass the sharks, which is a bad idea anyway, but also illegal because these sharks are inside a marine protected area."And if one is caught up in the swimming frenzy, there's no need to panic."...Enjoy the experience," Nosal said. "They will not bite unless grabbed. They are otherwise quite skittish and hard to approach. It is best to float still near the surface and allow the sharks to swim close." 2083

(KGTV)- Some local businesses in La Mesa are angry over the new location of the city's Farmers Market.  Some restaurants fear it will eat into their business.  The new La Mesa Farmers Market will shut down La Mesa Boulevard from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m."It kills my lunch hour and it kills my dinner hour and I just can't risk it," said Restaurant Owner Johnny Bedlion.  He owns Johnny B's, a popular bar and restaurant that's been around for almost two decades.   518

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Many beach parking lots remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego say someone is making it even harder to find public street parking by illegally painting curbs red.Surfers who frequent La Jolla Shores noticed something was a little off."Me and my friend came here the other day… and we're like, 'What? What the heck?'" surfer, Maddie Sadlier laughed.They say the public parking on Camino Del Collado, a small street that runs parallel to La Jolla Shores Drive suddenly vanished."It's been like this for a really long time, up until recently, it just turned red," surfer Zach Rudy said.It turns out, the red curb on Camino Del Collado is fake and illegal."It's really a problem that somebody took it upon themselves to take away public parking right next to the beach," Kristin Brinner, a volunteer with the Surfrider Foundation San Diego, said.Some parts of the curb are only painted red on top, and there are several splotches of red on the road - clear signs that it was not a professionally painted curb. Brinner says this is the second summer in a row that this small street curb has been illegally painted."I do hope that people realize that this is more than just a simple bucket of paint," Brinner said. "It's vandalism, and it's preventing people from accessing the beach that belong to all of us. For someone to do this and say that 'No you can't access the beach near me,' is a really pretty hateful act, in my opinion."According to San Diego Police, painting a curb red is a misdemeanor crime of vandalism. If caught, a person can be cited or arrested.The Surfrider Foundation does not know who keeps doing this. But they say every summer, as the beach crowds increase, so does the problem."It does seem like it was somebody in this neighborhood that just was maybe sick of outsiders coming in, wanted to claim it as their own street," Rudy said.San Diego Parking Enforcement is aware of the vandalism on Camino Del Collado and is already in the process of getting it repainted. But Brinner says the best way to fix the problem quickly is to be aware."They should document their parking spots they often use, and then they will have proof so they can say 'Hey, this used to be here, and now it's not!' So documentation is part of the solution," Brinner said.If you suspect that a curb has been illegally painted, report it to the police. 2442

Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell says that in five people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator.Caldwell says that generator safety is important and asks that residents keep generators away from covered areas of homes."Don't let a generator cost you your life," Caldwell said.The generator was inside an attached garage and the door was partially open. The level of carbon monoxide caused the deaths of all five inside the home.A total six people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning since Hurricane Laura has passed.Electricity is expected to remain out for days or even weeks throughout Louisiana following the hurricane. 670
