An effort by Microsoft and Linkedin to get people back to work has now reached more than 10 million job seekers in 231 countries and territories. Their goal? To give free digital skills to 25 million people.Representatives from Microsoft and Linkedin admit it was, and still is, an ambitious initiative to reach that many people and to target the digital space and help get people the skills they need to work in our new and changed world.“It has really been a challenging time for so many people and there are things people can do to upscale we all really need to learn new skills everyday” says Naria Santa Lucia, general manager of digital inclusion at Microsoft Philanthropies.Part of her job is to help people get a job. She says the program has reached people all over the world, and all over the nation.“We’ve seen a great uptick from states like California, Texas, NY, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Washington DC- but every single state has had a learner,” Santa Lucia said.Santa Lucia highlights people who quit their job hoping for more opportunity, right before the shutdown.The learning path on LinkedIn offers interview help, critical skills, and collaboration tools.Santa Lucia recalled someone who left their job before the pandemic who was able to find work.“He decided it was time to try something new,” Santa Lucia said. “He came upon the content and was able to supplement the technical background with the customer service skills to enhance his resume and become more attractive to employers and has landed a temporary position and is really looking forward to parlaying that into full time employment after the role concludes."Guy Berger is the principal economist at LinkedIn.“I’m pretty optimistic we’ll find our way out of this pandemic and even if we don’t, we’ll find ways of working around it more and more jobs will be online friendly or social distancing friendly,” Berger said.Berger and his team just finished the workforce report for October. They tracked labor trends, who's been hired, where people are working, and where they're moving, Berger said.“These reports in the late spring were pretty glum, hiring in the United States was down something like 40% compared to where it was a year ago. That’s huge,” Berger said. “We’ve never seen that big of a drop in our data in the last few years. But the good news: if you look at these reports… they’re improved we’re in a much better place.”The report shows that places like Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are gaining the most people. While the restaurant industry and travel and tourism are still down, there's been growth in areas like wellness and fitness.Santa Lucia says, the initiative identified the top 10 in demand jobs, like software development, sales representative, customer service specialist and project management.“Life gets in the way,” Santa Lucia said. “All of us, we’re trying to juggle helping our kids running schools in the other room, we’re thinking about other struggles and worried about the pandemic and exposures in the health arena as well. Apparently watching the Democratic National Convention from the White House, President Donald Trump sent out three tweets late Wednesday in all caps in as he faced sharp criticism from Democrats during the convention.The attacks came frequently and with vigor among the Democratic speakers, headlined by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris.Two of his tweets were apparently directed toward Obama. In one of the tweets, Trump repeated a claim that Obama spied on the Trump campaign in 2016. As hundreds of thousands of workers were sent home, and office buildings evacuated over coronavirus concerns, the CDC is warning about a potential secondary health concern when they come back: Legionnaires disease.The CDC should know, they are dealing with a Legionella bacteria discovery itself in some of their leased buildings in the Atlanta area. Several buildings are now closed because the bacteria was found in their water system, likely because of the prolonged shutdown."During the recent closures at our leased space in Atlanta, working through the General Services Administration (GSA), CDC directed the landlord to take protective actions," the CDC said in a statement to CNN."Despite their best efforts, CDC has been notified that Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires' Disease, is present in a cooling tower as well as in some water sources in the buildings. Out of an abundance of caution, we have closed these buildings until successful remediation is complete."The bacteria grows in warm or stagnant water, which is why there is concern as office buildings and restaurants sit abandoned during the pandemic. The bacteria is common in water, and is usually only a problem when the water becomes aerosolized and people breath it in; common sources are showers and water fountains. Legionella bacteria can cause deadly pneumonia.Last year, the CDC reports, 4,294 cases were reported. So far this year, 1,813 cases have been reported.It’s not known if the pandemic-caused shutdowns will worsen the problem or improve it; people are not gathering in hotels, offices or factory buildings as much, however thousands of miles of pipes in buildings are sitting empty and stagnating in the warm summer months."There is currently no nationwide surveillance of water systems for Legionella disease," Chris Edens, an epidemiologist on CDC's Legionella team, told CNN. He said state health departments that normally monitor and report cases of Legionella infection are tied up dealing with coronavirus.To reduce the likelihood of the bacteria growing in pipes, keep cold water cold and hot water hot; Legionella bacteria grows between 80° and 120° Fahrenheit.The CDC has recommendations on their website for building owners reopening after a prolonged shutdown. 2275

Amherst, New York Police are investigating a large fight that broke out Saturday around 8 p.m. at a Chuck E. Cheese. A video, courtesy of Jay Keenan of Lockport, shows the chaos inside the restaurant, which he says was going on for two minutes before he started recording. At one point Keenan says a woman was hit in the head with a booster seat. Amnesty International awarded Colin Kaepernick its Ambassador of Conscience Award on Saturday for his public protest against racial and social injustice."The Ambassador of Conscience award celebrates the spirit of activism and exceptional courage, as embodied by Colin Kaepernick," Salil Shetty, the human rights group's secretary-general, said in a statement. "He is an athlete who is now widely recognized for his activism because of his refusal to ignore or accept racial discrimination."The award is Amnesty International's highest honor, according to its website. Past winners include Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, U2, Alicia Keys and Ai Weiwei.
