STOCKHOLM, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Sustainability expert, Professor Mohan Munasinghe who is also director general of Sustainable Consumption Institute at University of Manchester said China's development is more sustainable than the U.S. and Europe when they were in the similar development stage.In a recent interview with Xinhua in the Swedish capital city Stockholm, Munasinghe who was also Co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace as Vice Chairman of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) said sustainable development meant to balance the economic and social development with the damage of environment."What China proposes to develop harmonious society and especially to harmonize economic and social development and the environment is a way towards sustainable development," Munasinge said."China is more hopeful because stainability index shows that China's development is much more sustainable than the U.S. and Europe when they had similar development stage when per capita income was around 3,000 U.S. dollars he said."The second reason is that the discipline in eastern culture especially in China and Japan, you have a discipline to mix the social changes with economic development, you need a lot of discipline to bring about these changes," he said, adding that China's way of experiment in changes is very good."China often implements a pilot program and if it is good, it then promotes it in other areas and finally in the whole country and if you fail, then forget it and try new ways, this way you make the changes more beneficial than make it a total failure," commended Munasinge."China has the social capital that you make your society a consensus building society, this is Chinese social capital. BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua)-- China's trade balance turned red in March with the country's first monthly trade deficit in six years, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said Saturday.China exports were valued at 112.11 billion U.S. dollars in March, up 24.3 percent year on year, while the imports surged 66 percent to 119.35 billion U.S. dollars, resulting in a deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars.The deficit was China's first since it posted a 2.26 billion deficit in April 2004, according to a report released by the GAC.China's total foreign trade rose 42.8 percent year on year to 231.46 billion U.S. dollars in March, according to Customs statistics.In the first quarter, foreign trade rose 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, with a surplus of 14.49 billion U.S. dollars though it was down 76.7 percent from the same period of last year.The country's trade surplus hit 23.7 billion U.S. dollars in February.Li Jian, a research fellow with the Research Institute under the Ministry of Commerce, said China's trade surplus had been falling since the start of the year."The deficit in March was just an extension of this trend," Li said.He said China did not purposefully pursue a trade surplus and had adopted a policy of encouraging imports and achieving a trade balance over the years.As the economy improved, any shift in people's expectations towards macro economic policies on liquidity and investment would influence importers' decisions and imported commodity prices, he said."Externally, we need to prudently monitor the world economy to avoid risk of a double-dip recession," he said. "Domestically, we need to focus on economic restructuring and transformation of economic growth pattern based on the stable growth of foreign trade."The GAC attributed the March deficit to shrinking exports of labor-intensive products, surging imports and rising commodity prices."The deficit in March is neither a recession, nor can it be sustained," the GAC said in its report, adding the deficit was small and China had maintained a "basic balance" between imports and exports.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A research report of China's foreign trade sector Sunday predicted the world's largest exporter would more than double its foreign trade volume by 2020.It also called on China to improve the quality of foreign trade sector and to lower import tariffs to promote the nation's trade balance.The report, launched by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Sunday at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair held in the southern city of Guangzhou, predicted the China's foreign trade volume would hit 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total, while imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total, according to the report, jointly compiled by researchers with think-tanks under the MOC, the Ministry of Finance, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.The report was seen by analysts and officials as a "road map" which lays out a theoretical basis for the reforms in China's trade policies and mechanisms over the next decade.The transformation of the foreign trade growth pattern has become an urgent requirement for China in the post-crisis era, said Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan.Weighed on by the global downturn, China's foreign trade contracted to a three-decade low in 2009, with total volume down 13.9 percent year on year to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars.Huo Jianguo, director of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) under the MOC, said the financial crisis has revealed a series of substantial problems hidden behind rosy figures, as the nation's foreign trade has been expanded in an ineffective and imbalanced way, or at the cost of environment pollution.Analysts said the downturn had prompted China to adjust its exports structure, and shift focus on high-end manufacturing, energy-saving and environment-friendly industries and developing modern service industries.Li Gang, a research fellow with the CAITEC and leading writer of the report, said the global downturn has phased out a number of backward and less competitive enterprises while offering great opportunities for innovative enterprises to improve growth structure and strengthen their anti-risk capabilities.Although China reported a a deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars in March, the first time over the past six years, analysts suggested decision makers to further expand imports by lowering tariffs, as a way to ease the nation's trade imbalance.Zhang Peng, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said China should increase imports of high-tech equipments, energy and resource products, and some agriculture and consumption goods in an attempt to address the trade imbalance.The nation's trade surplus has reached 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars over the last three decades, with foreign exchange reserves hitting 2.45 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of March, according to Zhang.Propping up world's economy recovery, China's foreign trade began to grow again in the first quarter, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.China would consolidate its position as a big trade power and make efforts to develop into a strong trader, and it would play a more active role in international trade arena, according to Zhong Shan.
