SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of rising COVID-19 cases is causing a nationwide shortage in testing supplies, and some San Diego institutions are looking for ways to tackle the deficit.“I think it’s going to get worse in the short term, so institutions all across the country need to be preparing as if it’s going to get worse,” said Dr. David Pride, the director of molecular microbiology lab at UC San Diego Health. “Across San Diego, institutions have been coming to us experiencing shortages of testing supplies.”Pride said UCSD Health has been looking at pool, or batch, testing as a possible solution to the shortage problem.“There’s the option of rather than having one patient per one test, to try to put multiple different patients together and try to perform one test on that pool of patients together,” he said.This type of testing could help UCSD’s current testing supply last much longer, he said.“They could take a nasal swab, a nasopharyngeal swab, and an oropharyngeal swab. We take those specimens, and we put them together,” Pride explains.He said the key is to spot the large number of patients who need to be tested but don’t appear to have symptoms of COVID-19.The group swabs would then be combined and tested at once.“If that pool is negative, then all the patients are negative, and if that pool is positive, then you need to go back and test each one individually,” he said.The strategy could be put to use in the next week or two, according to Pride.“It’s something that we certainly have validated to demonstrate that it can work,” he said. “We have submitted our strategy to the FDA and have gotten pretty good feedback about doing it.”However, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county’s epidemiology department's medical director, said with the current positivity rate across the county, the technique may not be too beneficial at all labs.The County of San Diego announced this week that it’s changing who can get a test as its free sites.The priority will be people who fall under the high-risk category, like healthcare workers and those with underlying health conditions.The county also announced a partnership with a local company that would provide up to 2,000 COVID-19 tests per day. 2215

San Diego Police Chief Nisleit said during a news conference that he would direct officers in a memo Tuesday to end the use of the carotid restraint procedure following a weekend of nationwide protests against police violence.“It’s the right thing to do for the community and it’s the right thing to do for our officers," Chief Nisleit said. “Some will say it’s taking away a tool, I say it’s adding a layer of protection."The announcement comes as thousands of people throughout San Diego County took to the street to protest the death of George Floyd. Following the announcement, the Oceanside Police Department said they would also end the use of the carotid restraint. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department released several videos of a deadly shooting that occurred after a pursuit ended in Chula Vista.The shooting took place after a pursuit that started in Orange County around midnight on Oct. 4. The suspect of the chase, identified as Christopher Ulmer, 33, of Whitter, Calif., led officers to Chula Vista, where authorities stopped his vehicle using a pit maneuver on I-805 south near Orange Avenue at about 1 a.m.Police say Ulmer exited his vehicle and pointed his arm at officers who believed he was holding a firearm, prompting officers to fire their service weapons. Officers say Ulmer got back up and pointed at officers again, prompting a second round of gunfire.RELATED: Pursuit suspect shot by law enforcement on I-805 in Chula Vista identifiedUlmer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.Video released by the Sheriff's Department showed a photo of a black, cylindrical object found underneath Ulmer's body that authorities believed to have been a gun before they fired their weapons.The CHP officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant John Holm who has been employed for 22 years, Officer Pakko Mendez who has been employed for 11 years, officer Javier Mendoza who has been employed for seven years, and officer Lauren Chi who has been employed for three years.RELATED: Authorities identify officers involved in deadly South Bay shootingThe San Diego Police officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant Michael Pidgeon who has been employed for 26 years, and officer Patrick Harvey who has been employed for seven years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout.The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman.It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer called on Governor Gavin Newsom to issue guidance that would allow San Diego's hotel industry to resume hosting business meetings and conferences."It's incredibly important for the jobs that this industry represents and the bottom line of dollars to our city," Faulconer said.San Diego tourism officials tell ABC 10News that the industry has lost an estimated billion due to the pandemic thus far. About 22% of out-of-town visitors to San Diego typically come for business meetings or conferences. The loss of this business has led to the loss of more than 50,000 local hospitality jobs.Thursday, Faulconer visited the Manchester Grand Hyatt to review the safety protocols they would put into place for business travelers. That includes plexiglass dividers, hand sanitizing stations, outdoor meeting spaces, and socially distanced seating."Seeing is believing," Faulconer said. "When you can see firsthand the remarkable precautions that our hotel industry has taken, the remarkable job that they have done with leisure travel, we can host business travel safely.”Faulconer points out that California is the only state in the country that bans hotels from hosting businesses.ABC 10News reached out to the California Department of Public Health.
