A 17-year-old has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a teenage girl at an Alabama high school on Wednesday, the district attorney's office announced.Michael Jerome Barber is charged as an adult in the death of 17-year-old Courtlin Arrington, Jefferson County District Attorney Mike Anderton said in a news release Friday. Barber also faces a charge of "being a certain person forbidden to possess a pistol" for having the firearm on school grounds. It was not immediately clear on Friday afternoon if Barber was represented by an attorney.Arrington was an aspiring nurse and a senior attending Huffman High School in Birmingham when two gunshots rang out around dismissal time on Wednesday afternoon, killing her and injuring another 17-year-old male student, the district attorney's statement said.Investigators with the Birmingham Police Department spoke with "many of the students in the school, in the classroom where the shooting took place and collected evidence from the scene," the release said. "Based on the evidence as presented to us, warrants were issued for the person responsible for this horrific tragedy.""Our hearts go out to the family of Ms. Arrington, all of her friends, and those whose lives would have been changed through her nursing dreams had this event not occurred," the statement said. "This is a parent's worst nightmare."Birmingham police Chief Orlando Wilson said earlier this week that police considered the shooting accidental, though he did not elaborate. The school was placed on a brief lockdown when the shots were fired on Wednesday afternoon, and police responded to the scene. The school has metal detectors, and school resource officers were on site at the time of the shooting, according to Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Lisa Herring.Wednesday's school shooting in Birmingham was the 14th in the US in 2018.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. (KGTV) -- The woman accused of hitting a pedestrian in Oceanside and continuing to drive after his body went through the windshield of her vehicle was found guilty Friday afternoon.A jury Friday found 31-year-old Esteysi “Stacy” Sanchez guilty of murder in the second degree, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and hit and run with death or permanent serious injury.Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce told the jury that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over 69-year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.Tenhulzen’s body went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car. The bottom of the victim's leg was severed in the accident but was recovered at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was declared dead at the scene.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez was eventually arrested at her home, and she had shards of glass in her hair when taken into custody. Authorities said her blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit about two hours after the collision.Sanchez faces up to 15 years to life in prison. A probation and sentencing hearing is set for May 31.Information provided by City News Service was used in this report. 1604
(KGTV) - On Friday, Attorney and Deputy Director of ACLU’s National Immigrants’ Rights Project Lee Gelernt spoke to ABC 10News about how his staff members have not found the parents of 545 children nationwide who were separated by the Trump Administration.“We have found hundreds of others but there remains [to be] hundreds who we have not found,” he said in a Zoom interview.Earlier this week, the ACLU revealed the numbers to San Diego Federal Court Judge Dana Sabraw in a new filing for a case stemming from a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, challenging the president's practice of asylum-seeking family separations, which were put into place after he took over office. “We then had to go door to door on the ground in Central America looking for these parents. [It was a] painstaking, dangerous process. We were making some progress but ultimately the pandemic hit and that slowed things down,” he added.Gelernt said the children are now living with relatives and foster families in the U.S., after they were released from government detention. He added that the ACLU will continue searching for their parents and advocating for their return. “We think that given what these families have gone through, their children ripped away from them, they deserve legal status in the United States,” he said.ABC 10News reached out to ICE for comment, which referred us to DHS. We are waiting for a reply.A status conference is set for Dec. 4. 1442
