SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego began a virtual open house Monday to solicit public input for two potential uses for a vacant lot in the Encanto community.The city is asking the public to consider two redevelopment proposals for the Valencia Business Park located at Stevens Way and Imperial Avenue.Located in the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone, the Valencia Business Park has been vacant for more than 20 years. According to the city, the community-focused redevelopment is moving forward and expected to create at least 72 full-time jobs."For years, the vision for Southeastern San Diego has included activating the Imperial Avenue Corridor and development of the Valencia Business Park property," said Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe. "We are energized to take another crucial step in this process and get vital input from our community on this redevelopment, as we see this vision come to fruition."The first proposal is a campus for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, described as a "wellness-centered community hub" that would account for 150 healthcare jobs, including 75 new ones.The other proposal is the San Diego Energy Equity Campus, a community hub site which proposes to provide educational resources to the underserved Southeast San Diego community.The public can view the proposals and provide feedback by visiting ValenciaBusinessParkInput.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 3.2 percent in November, with nonfarm industries adding nearly 10,000 jobs, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The November unemployment rate is down from a revised 3.3 percent in October and even further below the 3.5 percent rate in November 2017. Total nonfarm employment increased by 9,800 jobs from October to November while total farm employment lost 300 jobs. Nonfarm employment now totals 1,503,800 in San Diego County and farm jobs total 8,500. The trade, transportation and utilities industry added 5,900 jobs month-over-month, the most of any industry in the county. Government was the county's only other industry to add more than 800 jobs, increasing by 2,900. According to EDD data, 1,300 of the government jobs added were in the state and local education sub-industries. The leisure and hospitality industry continued to lose jobs as 2018 recedes further away from the summer months. The industry lost the most jobs of any in the county from October to November at 1,300. Year-over-year data showed an employment increase of 26,400, all nonfarm jobs, from November 2017 to November 2018. A majority of those gains, 16,500 jobs, came in the professional and business services industry. Year-over-year farm employment stayed steady at 8,500 jobs. California's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 4.1 percent in October to 3.9 percent in November, according to the EDD. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors Tuesday directed San Diego County's chief administrative officer to create a stronger wildfire protection plan.By a unanimous vote, the board asked Helen Robbins-Meyer to find ways to expand and more strongly support fire-safe councils, enhance pre-fire vegetation management, improve pre-fire emergency planning, strengthen fire-safety measures in new construction, and reduce loss from wildfires in existing buildings.Robbins-Meyer will work with the Fire Authority, Sheriff's Department and other relevant county departments and outside agencies to present recommendations within 90 days.There are 60,000 homes in the county's unincorporated areas that are at a high risk for wildfire, board Chairwoman Dianne Jacob said.
