NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans trumpeter is offering kids trumpets in exchange for guns. Shamarr Allen tells news agencies that he has a 9-year-old son and started the project last week, the day after a 9-year-old boy was shot and killed. He says the trumpet changed his life when he was 12 or 13 and started playing for tips in the French Quarter — and he wants to give other kids a chance. New data shows Alzheimer's Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.In the last 15 years, it's grown more than 100 percent. It's projected to cost the nation billions in care costs.But there's one thing that could cut those costs, and change how people live with this disease.Married for 36 years, Rick and Traci Edmonson describe their time together like this."It's a whirlwind!" Rick said, and Traci agreed.Some things, like kids and grandkids, they expected."Really definitely they are the joys of life," Traci said.But some things, they didn't."It was terrifying in those small moments that was going on," Rick said. "And it was just scared me to death."One day, about two years ago, Rick was driving and got lost."For him to get lost in a place that he knew and not be able to find his way back was a huge red flag," Traci said.They went to a doctor, and just days before Christmas, at age 59, Rick was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease."We didn't know what the future would hold," Traci said. "It is just such a scary thing."A new report out from the Alzheimer's Association shows the couple is not alone. More than 5.7 million people are currently living with the disease, and by 2050, that number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million."You know I think it's important for the public to understand the epidemic that is at our front door right now," said Amelia Schafer with the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado.Often, people are living with Alzheimer's and don't know it, Schafer said, and finding out can have big benefits. The report found early detection through annual doctor visits could save up to 15% percent of care costs."What we know is that early detection treating it earlier, potentially keeping someone in their home a little bit longer, can save hundreds of thousands for a family member over the lifetime," Schafer said.For Rick, early detection and working with the Alzheimer's Association helped preserve his quality of life."I couldn't do the things I'd like to do and it's coming back," Rick said.Now he's looking forward to the life he and Traci always imagined."I think more kids," he said. New research from AAA shows too many senior citizen drivers are not having conversations about when they should stop driving.AAA says that by the year 2030, 1 in 5 drivers will be over the age of 65, which is why the company is urging people to have conversations with their older family members sooner rather than later.According to the study, 83 percent of older drivers report never having a conversation with family or a doctor about their safe driving ability.  The report states that those who do only do so after being involved in a crash or other driving incidents.AAA recommends having conversations with seniors before you start seeing red flags.Here are things to keep in mind when beginning a dialogue with your loved one:Start early and talk often. Make sure you stay positive, and make sure they know the focus is on their own safety.Avoid generalizations about older drivers’ abilities.Have a one-on-one conversation. Doing it with the entire family can make a driver feel alienated.Stick to facts. Focus on a medical condition or medication that might make driving unsafe, and don’t assume their driving should be stopped altogether.Plan together. Let the driver play an active role in planning for their “driving retirement.”In 2016, more than 200,000 senior drivers were injured in traffic crashes. NORTH READING, Mass. – An off-duty police officer in Massachusetts is being credited with saving three people from an early morning house fire on Tuesday.The North Reading Police Department says Sgt. Thomas Encarnacao had just finished his shift and was on his way home when he noticed flames emerging from inside the home.After alerting dispatch of the fire, Encarnacao entered the home to alert the residents. He was able to locate a man sleeping on a coach at the front of the house and helped him outside to safety, according to police.The man told Encarnacao and other officers who had arrived to help that there were two more residents in the home, a 13-year-old boy sleeping in a back bedroom and a man in the basement of the home.The man in the basement was able to get out on his own after officers alerted him, but police say first responders had to pull the boy out through a window of a smoke-filled room.All three residents were evaluated by EMS at the scene and didn’t go to the hospital. No firefighters were injured. One officer suffered a cut to his hand while attempting to breach a basement window.Firefighters were able to put the blaze out, but the house ended up sustaining smoke, fire and water damage. Police say the residents were displaced and are being assisted by family members.The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.“The work of the three officers this morning was truly courageous, and I am incredibly proud of them,” said Police Chief Michael Murphy. “Sgt. Encarnacao took decisive and immediate action, which very likely saved the lives of the residents inside the house. Once he got the first resident out, all three officers went back into the house, without protective gear, to look for additional residents. Their actions to get all of the residents out safely was truly heroic.” 1841
