ULAN BATOR, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A group of children from China's earthquake-stricken Qinghai province arrived in Mongolia on Tuesday for an eight-day visit.A ceremony was held at the Nairamdal international children's center, 27 km from the capital city of Ulan Bator, to welcome the 59 children and youngsters from Qinghai in western China, which was hit by a major earthquake in April.Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar invited the children from the quake-hit region for a visit in early June when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Mongolia.Last year, 60 children from China's southwestern Sichuan province, which was also hit by a deadly earthquake in 2008, visited Mongolia at the invitation of then Prime Minister Bayar Sanjaa.

UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, Xue Hanqin, was elected judge of the International Court of Justice here Tuesday.Xue, a member of the International Law Commission, was elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council in separate voting.Xue won all 15 votes in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, Claude Heller, the Mexican UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, announced after the 15- nation Council cast the secret ballots.Heller, at the open Council meeting, also read a letter from the president of the General Assembly, Ali Treki, who said that Xue won a majority of votes in the 192-nation UN body.Xue "was elected member of the International Court of Justice," Heller said.The election was conducted under the relevant Security Council resolution to fill the vacancy after Judge Shi Jiuyong, a Chinese, resigned on May 28.She is the only female among the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice, and the third Chinese to serve on the Court.Xue told reporters here that she thanked all those who voted for her and said that she will carry out her duty under the UN Charter and the Statute of the Court.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) asked authorities in the nation's major wheat-planting areas to work to achieve quick summer grain harvests in spite of the difficulties posed by the extreme weather.This year's summer harvest has proven more difficult than usual because the ripening of winter wheat has taken place one week later than normal because of the bitterly cold weather last winter, while the consistently heavy rains that recently struck south China have impeded the harvest efforts, the MOA said.The ministry said local authorities should prioritize the harvest work and complete the harvest as quickly as possible.Reaping machine should be distributed properly in different locations to raise the harvesting efficiency, it added. Also, local departments should update information such as weather, market demands, prices and transportation to ensure a smooth harvest, the ministry noted.China's four major grain production areas have shown cautious optimism toward their 2010 summer grain output. Henan, Shandong and Anhui provinces expect output of wheat to be equal or slightly higher than last year, while Hebei province forecasts slightly reduced output, according to information coming from a high level agriculture meeting held earlier in May in Zhengzhou city, the capital of Henan province.According to the MOA data, China's summer grain output accounts for one quarter of its annual food yield.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 127 people have been confirmed dead in rain-triggered mudslides Sunday in a northwest China county, while rescuers are racing against the clock to search nearly 1,300 others who are still missing.Heavy downpours triggered landslides and mud-rock flows in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning.The rescue headquarters in Zhouqu estimated that 1,294 people are missing as of 9 p.m. Sunday. Earlier the provincial civil affairs department put the figure at nearly 2,000.Another 117 were injured, including 29 in serious condition, as of 9:25 p.m.. In addition, 1,242 have been rescued from debris or brought to safety from places such as tops of buildings.About 45,000 people have been evacuated, according to a statement from the provincial civil affairs department.The water level in the county seat of Chengguan Township had declined by 40 cm, after floodwaters carrying mud and rocks submerged half the town in the small hours on Sunday, said Mao Shengwu, head of the prefecture.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao instructed the Gansu provincial government and other related departments to spare no efforts to save lives. CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.
